    Hi Forum,

While re-aligning the front bumper and swapping a steering pump I discovered how simple it is to slide the remove the front assembly on a B6, which has encourage me to tackle an upcoming cambelt change.

However while the 3 Torx bolts on one side slackened off OK, two on the other side have had their heads mashed by some incompetent mechanic and the one that was intact broke the Torx adapter, so looking like it has been seriously over-torqued, presume Torque-gunned.

Any recommendations for removing seriously overtorqued, mashed headed Torx Bolts?

What should the correct Torque for these be?

    Many Thanks

Sometimes it's the materials/coatings concerned which cause seizure but in any case first thing to be done is to give it a good whack or two on bolt head with a hammer

Similar, and often a two person job after spraying with Plusgas: something firmly around Torx bit like a right-sized ring spanner (but longer is better) while pushing head of Torx bit in via a bit of wood or alloy block and hammering it. And a good, new Torx bit.

I had hell today removing an M5 4mm hex head screw from a 2010 TTS Haldex control unit upper fixing. The lower came out in seconds... the upper took me three hours. I started off with an M4 hex which rounded out... then an M6 XZN which lasted seconds followed by a Torx 27 and then a Torx 30 and all failed. I ended up flexing the control box until the screw snapped so I could use an air saw to slot the screw and use a ground down flat blade to wind the stub out. Then I had to use an M6 drill to bore the 40mm of the rotted in screw out of the control box only much later to find the box is faulty and a new one is £1030... I have had my fill of modern cars!

    Hi Roverfan,
Tried that! Have left them for 2 weeks with oil soaking around the heads, prior to next attempt.
    Thanks

    Hi VAG-Abound,

Must admit Torx that broke was about 6cm long in a socket adaptor on a ratchet and unsurprisingly snapped where the section changed, a shorter one might twist less.
    Thanks

The last time I came across a stubborn torx screw it took out all of my T30 bits long and short. It did this because it was in a tight spot (EGR inlet pipe back of the engine) not allowing for any of my normal contingency plans other than try again. In the end very precise use of the gas pencil torch worked. I was initially hesitant to use heat due to having plastics in the area

A mini grinder, a hand impact wrench may help in situations where space/use of both hands is available. As well as the engineering trick where you knock bolt round using a hammer and chisel
