Thanks for your suggestions so far. I have now fitted a new brake sensor and still no change. Daughter now tells me that it has happened about 3 times before but always starts if left a couple of minutes {but not in this case) if I could get communication with diagnostics it would help.

Have you looked at the VCDS users map.
    https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/5319-Vagcom-VCDS-User-Locations

There may be someone local who could scan it for you.

If you get your own scanner I would only choose OBDEleven or VCDS.
Other makes may not give you all the available info.

Thanks for your suggestion of scanner, had a look and they are quite expensive for the VCDS ones, I realise that you get what you pay for, but wondered if they become available second hand

Ive had a couple of mechanics look at the car and they both said ECU was faulty. I bought an exchange ready programmed ECU for £380. Fitted it and still the same, so not ECU. I'm thinking along the lines of immobilizer now, any suggestions how to go about this?
