1998 Audi A6 C5 2.4 FWD Saloon. In february it suddenly wouldn't start. Total silence. Lights in dash though. Changed the battery, it was bad anyway. Still not starting. The car has been on floor jacks since that. During these five months I've tried to start the car 3 times, but nothing.

Yesterday, after detatching the battery charger, I decided to give it a try and magic… it started (?).

The car has an original alarm, but has been unlocked the hole time, but today I noticed that it was locked (I didn't do it), so it must be some kind of auto-locking. Strange though, the car was unlocked for 5 months without any auto-locking.

    Ideas, anyone?

Thanks for answering. This is my first Audi, and after I read about the dreaded chamber flooding I've made sure the two holes for draining were completely open and I've checked the floor, it was dry. But, there maybe other things that needed drying up (?).

So, the day after it was dead again, but I found that moving the shift lever from P to 2 back to P and down to N made it possible to start. For a while. It was not a faulty range switch, but the starter interlock relay. Go figure.

Well, at least I thought it was the starter interlock relay. I removed it and made a jump between pin slots 30 and 87, and the car started. BUT, a new 204 (J219) relay did nothing. Here's what I have checked so far:

    1. No codes in diagnose except brake switch (which is working?), done by mechanic at the repair shop.
    2. Clearly the battery, starter, ignition switch are working.
    3. The shifter lever linkage cable works and moves the range switch F125 as it should, inspected with camera.
    4. All indicator lights at the dash work correctly when moving the gear shift selector.

Initially I thought this probably was the range switch, but there's no codes, no indication of limp mode, can it still be?
