Thanks for all the info from people here. Garage got replacement part with new o ring and £50 labour to fit. Seems like I could have made a stab at this job with hindsight. 500miles later and no coolant lost so all good.

Car's gone into limp mode as the following fault codes have appeared since the work (full scan attached)

18000 - Altitude Sensor / Boost Pressure Sensor
    P1592 - 35-00 - Implausible Correlation
    17564 - Manifold Pressure Sensor (G71)
    P1156 - 35-10 - Open/Short to Ground - Intermittent

I think the G71 sensor is one they'll have had to disconnect when changing the flange?

I'm not sure what to make of the boost pressure implausible correlation error - looked it up on the ross-tech wiki
    18000/P1592/005522 - Ross-Tech Wiki

and the 17564/p1156 didn't seem to have an entry? only found this forum mention it?
VW POLO 2004 - multiple engine fault codes

I'm not really sure what practical things to try? Ross-tech mentions just "checking wiring" and "ground spot corrosion". ground spots seem a bit unlikely so I'm going to start by trying to unplug what I think is the G71 sensor on the top of air pipe that blocked access to the head coolant flange.

Car's booked in to go back to the garage that did the coolant flange on Tuesday so I guess I shouldn't use VCDS to to clear the codes before then.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Had a look and maybe our wiring and/or MAF sensor is on the way out! I'll put a picture up in a moment

Never used this bit of VCDS before so apologies if I'm putting this info up in a daft format but here are some screenshots which I think show the MAF readings

    Values after cleaning up connector:

    Capture.jpg

I also had a screenshot of it with the MAF unplugged and the actual value didn't change. The fact that the actual value is sat at 421 makes me think I'm going to need to do more than just keep cleaning the contacts!

Is there anyway to test whether the wiring loom and MAF are ok by measuring the resistance across certain pins? ie. certain resistance between the MAF pins a and b means it's ok. And also on the loom side connector pins measure between pins x and y?

    Thanks.
    Ian

I believe it's a digital unit, sending codes rather than simple voltages, so no simple measurement will tell you it's health.

I've had a pin break due to corrosion, causing an item to appear to not be there. I'd give the pin a wiggle with needle nose pliers to see if it is still well connected mechanically and by implication electrically. Did you clean up the other side with a few jiggles of something like folded wet and dry paper?

BTW, I'd ask a mod to split this to a new thread. Not really related to the title anymore.

Thanks VAG-Abound. Yes you're right I should've moved this onto a separate thread. I've switched over to
    18000 - Altitude Sensor / Boost Pressure Sensor P1592 - 35-00 - Implausible Correlation 17564 - Manifold Pressure Sensor (G71) P1156 - 35-10 - Open/Sh

I've realised I've been getting MAF and MAP muddled up!

    Cheers,
    Ian
