    Hi Folks,

My son advised me that he tried to put some grease on his Mk5 Golf TDI gear linkage, both at the gearstick end and the gearbox end. Since doing so, he’s struggling to change gear whilst the vehicle is moving.

I’ve had a look and it feels fine when engine running at neutral and only struggles when the car is moving.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Unsure why he’s greased it in the first place but any help / guidance would be appreciated!!

We could do with a little more info on the car as there are two distinctly different systems.

Sorry, it’s a 2004 Golf TDi. The linkage appears to be the cable variety, with two cables (with the springs). It’s a 5 speed box.

    Hope that is more helpful!

It sounds like a clutch issue so as the slave cylinder is external the first job I would do is fit a new slave cylinder (Euro Car Parts sell a reasonably priced Valeo part), bleed the system thoroughly and try it.
