  1. Soot in engine bay, glow plug light and reduced boost

Going to work on Thursday the car started driving "oddly", changing gears really eagerly, the throttle pedal went "soft" and the glow plug light started flashing. No other warnings. I pulled over, restarted and all was fine. During the day it did it 3 other times.
I took it to a mate who ran a diagnostic on the car and there were 3 underboost faults. I noticed that the "lid" for the airbox was off. Fixed that.
As the car has 58k (FSH, oil change very 9k) I thought it may benefit from a Terraclean so took it to a friends garage. The car behaved on the way down.
Whilst under the bonnet he noticed a load of soot next to the turbo on the suspension mount and the turbo casing itself.
There was 1% soot loading. It's going back in on Thursday to investigate the soot but as yet has not thrown a light.
Could the airbox lid have caused it to throw a light?
I read the thread with the other FL 2.0Tdi that had the soot in the engine bay but he rejected the car so there was no further work carried out.
    Anyone else had this?
    Thanks

There shouldn't be any soot whatsoever in the engine bay, sound like a gasket has blown causing the turbo to run slowly, and not produce the requested boost, hence the limp mode.

On Monday, for the first 200 miles the car behaved faultlessly during motorway, A & B roads and in stop-start traffic.
When on CC it faulted again whilst gently throttling on is we went up a gentle hill. I reckon bluzie is right. The blown gasket is resulting in exhaust gasses getting out, hence the soot, and the car thinking it's under boosting and throwing the glow plug light. Really impressive for a car with less than 60k on it I must say. Ho hum.

I remember seeing reports of this from other people with the Ultra 2.0 TDi engine. If I recall, they were told at the time it's normal, and nothing to worry about.

OK, a couple of minutes searching, and I found the post:

Soot in engine-bay - FL ultra

It will be interesting to hear what response you get today.

    Good luck!!

Hi, I read that but he didn't get to the bottom of it as he rejected the car. I can't find any other Ultra with the same issue annoyingly

Now the car is reporting a MAF issue! Still doesn't explain the soot though.
I have the car back, codes cleared to run until it faults again so they can get another reading!
