So my 6 month out of date warranty Passat has developed an annoying issue.

Nearly every journey, it was at about 6-7 miles but now thinking it might be after a set amout of time the vehicle throws up an overtemperature alarm.

    The journey goes as follows:

Car temperature builds to 90deg in 3-4 miles and sits there no issues.
At 6-7 miles the temperature starts to creep up and then hits the over temp alarm
I pull over turn off engine and sit for 5 mins then start up and drive on with no further problems temperature drops to 90 deg. This includes high speed dual carriageway journeys

Recently I have found that as the temperature starts to climb if I stop the car and start again after 30 seconds it drops to 90deg and is fine.

I am not ragging the vehicle - just sitting at 50mph and ~1200 rpm.

I did notice that the fan had stopped running after some journeys when I turned off but that now seems to be happening again.

Anyone come across this issue? Know what the problem is? Have a solution? or KNow how much this will cost me at VW dealership? By the way as it its OK it might not appear for them!

I also had a trip out and it did not happen!

I have just had this exact issue diagnosed this morning!!! Water pump c and a common issue I believe. Mine is two weeks out of warranty

Off to vw this afternoon to hopefully get them to contribute!

So apparently vw aren't doing good will contributions anymore. I'm all of 3 weeks out of warranty and haven't really used the car since the MOT on the 12th March. Not ideal. Hopefully it will be a cheap enough repair

Interesting - wonder why it is fine after a turn off and on.

What sort of money are you looking at? Did you have to book it in for a second visit? My VW dealership is a nightmare logistically to get to.

Would be interested to know what VW UK say too.

Waiting to hear from them officially. My local Indy diagnosed this morning and quoted £420 but suggested letting vw do it as they should contribute.

I'm hoping my vw garage will contribute otherwise they might be losing a customer. I'll be looking for cars with a longer warranty
VW have fixed price pump and belt advertised online at £549 so I think that's your maximum really. Plus £72 to plug it in and diagnose which is just extortion!!!

I think the switch must kick in eventually it's just sticking. It's going to fail eventually then you're in trouble I think.

    Thanks for the information.

To be fair this has been happening for a few months but wit lockdown the car does not get used daily.

I will shove it towards VW, might try a nearer one as opposed to the one I bought it from - logistics are easier.

Hmm KIA sounds promising then.... I might be going the same way. It's a real shame I really like the 190 GT but this is the second issue I have had in the last 12 months and this is not what I expected from VW.

I was thinking the same. Either that or I'll keep mine at the end and expect to pay for these things. What other issue did you have?

One of ther rear brakes suddenly started to show that it was not making contact across the whole of the contact area - 50% went rusty. Apparently an external issue! Cost me for new discs and pads at the back.

    £290!

I've had those done too. Tracking needed doing to. I'll let you know how I get on with mine anyway. Didn't expect this from a VW to be honest
