Its not had an update to my knowledge - is this related to the emissions mess that VW got involved with ? Any way to varify if car has or has not had the update ?

According to my Haynes manual - it talks about removing the exhaust front pipe /CAT & particle filter which I assume is to allow access to the cooler from the top of the engine ? Is it possible to access the relevant bolts/pipes etc from underneath the car - if so I may attempt the replacement even if it takes me >>> 6 hours to save £750 in labour charges.
I see a DASIS unit from ******* for £138 - seems to get a good rating and much cheaper then the £378 for Audi approved unit (Wahler unit @ £216, o.thers @ up to £360)

It was the Dasis aftermarket ones I had problems with and the Wahle aftermarket unit which failed before the car came off the lift. Only fit genuine VW from the dealer or TPS, if it fails with two years you have a parts and labour warranty even if you fit it. I have never tried to do one a few feet of the ground, I imagine it would be unbearable torture and almost everything is done from below. Even with it 6 feet up in the air I now refuse to do this and "delegate" the task to the younger members of staff, even then it's a miserable job with oil and coolant dripping all over you. It is strongly recommended to replace the turbo to DPF coupling ring as a complete unit as they don't like being re-used and there is a decent pile of gaskets and nuts you need as well.

the red arrow shows a common pain, the manifold to flex pipe studs often snap or are even snapped when you get in there and drilling them out inaccurately means turbo off.

You can do the job by disconnecting the DPF at the turbo and the centre coupling (which usually falls to bits and requires some "hot spanner") and move it to the cars right and secure it out of the way with tie wraps.

Hi Crasher, Thanks for all your help - I think I am kidding myself that I have the expertise/equipment to facilitate this repair - I think I need to get repair done professionally.

Yes, that bolt is a pain! I had a sensor changed, which should have been about £100, but that bolt snapped and that meant everything being taken apart as per EGR replacement (which they had already done several months before). Cost £350 in the end as the labour was charged at half price......

The saga continues - Car got through its MOT OK but still getting intermittent EGR fault reported - agonising about shelling out ~£1000 to get a new EGR fitted ( got same quote figure from both Audi dealer & local garage) . On checking- the car has already had the update - so does not look like I can use the update as a means to get Audi to fix it for free. Now wondering the merits in whether the EGR can be cleaned - seen some posts re spraying cleaner into the EGR and tryingto clean it that way , also see there is a compancy called terraclean Engine Carbon Clean | DPF Cleaning | EGR Cleaning | Injector Cleaning who offer a service to clean the EGR ( unsure how much this will cost) . Any advice on whether this is an acceptable course of action OR I am just throwing money away ( better throwing it towards getting new EGR fitted )?

I take it from that comment - you do not recommend cleaning the EGR /using terraclean - got a quote of £110 for them to do what they do .

On a CAYC that fault code is usually a faulty motor so new cooler unit, I can't afford to mess around. The EGR deposits that get stuck in there need a descaler gun to remove, no rinsing with fancy chemicals is going to shift any more than the oily top layer.

You could fit one of these, about a half hour job.

The engine will put out more NOx, but it is already emitting more pollution anyway while faulty.

Plus it seems only a matter of time before the new one will start failing.
They don't seem to be fit for purpose.
