Friend has a 2.0 bkd golf that was fitted with a solid flywheel and clutch

They have changed to a dual mass but have major issues

    Car won’t turn over
Starter smokes when used a lot
    Car won’t bump start
Car won’t bump start with starter removed

The gearbox engages fine and the clutch works perfect

Are the flywheel bolts different for both flywheels the engine feels like it’s locked up and won’t turn over

    Thanks

The dual mass flywheel and clutch shouldn't per se cause any problems - the flywheel bolts that attach each respective part - SMF, DMF - may well be different, but the flywheel bolts are torque-to-yield items and should only ever be used the once. They also usually come with the flywheel and clutch assembly as bought, so this shouldn't be an issue.

It sounds like the starter may be suspect - can you replace with a known good one? Though having said that, my BKD starts quickly even though I know the starter is old and knackered.

My first thought would be the starter. And, if the starter has been getting so much abuse that it's smoking, perhaps the battery no longer has enough power to provide the injectors with the juice they need to operate?

They have gone from a solid clutch to a dual mass

The clutch is new but the dual mass and all the bits old I assume

I only say as we have jump started the car using 3 batteries and off 2 cars

Down the massive hill the car jams solid and stops

    Just a update

Taken the gearbox off and the insides wrecked the person who fitted it fitted the clutch with too long bolts and the clutch pressure plate has been catching the bell housing

They are putting it back together but no idea of the damage to clutch etc

Bitter pill to swallow for them trying to do things without paying out

A set of 5 quid bolts would have saved ripping the gearbox out again

The car starts but doesn’t sound great so god knows what damage has been caused

Ideally send a lawyer letter giving them a reasonable time to make good all damage due to not using reasonable skill and care, advising that if they refuse you'll get the work done elsewhere and ask them for payment. I'd put 14 days as that period as it's a relatively simple job and parts should be easily accessible. If they refuse get the work done elsewhere (3 quotes including VAG), pay, send invoice to original place and pursue through MCOL (previously Small Claims) if necessary.

If paid on credit card that may be route to get original cost back, but probably not consequential damage.
