I need to remove the offside exhaust system. BIG PROBLEM with inaccessibility of top stud nut on manifold to front pipe joint ( 3 studs : 2 below, 1 above). Access from above seems impossible. Can just see the top nut but can't even touch it never mind get a socket on it. (Nearside not a problem its not symmetrical)

I don't believe its possible to get to it with long socket extension over the top of the pipe from underneath. Audi workshop manual no help. Local VWAudi specialist also perplexed (car too old to remember).

Absolute job stop! Engine out? I sure hope not!

Would greatly appreciate advice from anyone who has been there and done this one. Will probably be the same arrangement for the VW version ie 2.8 V6 5V DOHC Passat.
    Thanks.

It is possible with the engine in but bloody hard work requiring modified tools... you should try getting the manifolds off a 2.7 twin turbo with the engine in...

Hello Crasher, Thanks for your reply. Its very helpful to have a perspective on it from someone who is familiar with the difficulty. I suspected it is a special tools job.
I also suspect that Audi made the situation worse when they upgraded the engine from SOHC to DOHC which has more bits sticking out of the back of the head.

I would appreciate a comment on my only idea which is:- Attempt to get more access over the top of the pipe by "drooping" the back of the engine down on its mounts. Would involve quite a bit of work to even do that of course (If its even possible?).
    Cheers

From deep and distant memory, I would drop the subframe which is easy on a lift.

OK. I will have a look at that approach on a lift as you say. Many thanks for your input.

    Hi Folks

It has turned out to be possible to weld in new flexi joints (the specific problem) in situ without taking the front pipes off. So I am not able report back for the benefit of other interested owners how difficult or not the drop subframe approach to facilitate offside exhaust removal is.
