    Hi

I purchased a dirt cheap 55 plate mk5 golf 2.0 FSi a year ago. The car had been sat for 12 months and only needed a jump to get going. The plan was to take it to nurburgring. I put an MOT on it and did about 100 miles before putting it into storage (large dry double garage out on a farm) The car was started about once every 2 months and left to warm up. 6 months ago it was used for a 200 mile journey that it performed great in before going back to storage. Again it was started every 6-8 weeks. Last time the car started had been 6 weeks ago and fired up with a jump pack. I went to retrieve the car from storage last night to find the battery cells had collapsed, i had a spare with me so put that on. Car would turn over but not fire. Code reader could not connect so i pulled the coils and plugs, could smell fuel but could not get a spark. I put new plugs in but no difference. I pulled every fuse in the engine bay and tested on a meter, all passed. I even checked the bus bar with the 80A fuses and all was fine

At this point i gave up and called AA to recover it the 40 miles back to mine. AA could not get any communication from the ECU, after disconnecting the battery briefly the diagnostic kit sprung into life and made communication but then wasn't able to read any codes and lost the connection. Their guess was ECU fault or crank sensor.

Any ideas where i should start looking, seems very odd that the car had given no issues at all

The G28 crank speed sensor is a prime suspect but the unstable ECU comms is concerning.

I went to remove the ECU I found it had been replaced in the past with the ECU having MK6 Golf written on it. So i don't have access to the original codes. What do i need to swap in another ECU and get it running again.

To do it properly requires the VAG diagnostic system ODIS to match the ECU to the car, anything else is a bodge skirting around the correct procedure.
