I have the same problem this morning - my 2016 2 L Sline Ultra has done 31K miles. I eventually managed to find the emergency release cable in the boot. Audi Fuel Filler Release.JPG You pull the metal rod out of the clips and turn the clips 90 degrees to move the cover - be careful has the 12volt boot cable socket still attached. I then had to get my hand back up behind the panel - got the red release cable - pulled and nothing happened. Went down to my local garage - guy has not heard or problem before, so having read loads of threads about this being a soleniod failure and common fault, started to push and move a little the fuel filler when releasing central locking and it opened. It's now remaining open until I fill the tank later today, but can anyone advise how to remove the filler assy to get at the solenoid to replace it - I can see the 4 rubber lug type things - and have read you have to remove filler cover from outside. cannot find any videos on youtube. This picture - have put WD40 on Central Locking pin - it does seem sticky, the drain hole is circled blue, and on an A5 forum - saw a video with guy making holes on red cirled rubber parts and pulling out assembly. Don't know if this is correct though. Audi Fuel Filler Release 1.jpg Grateful for any advice. Thanks

ps My last service I got done at local garage - all previous done at Audi - and I declined the timing belt change offer from Audi - so thought about trying Audi Customer service but unlikely to get any joy there I don't think - although common fault does not seem to be a recall item.

This is probably the best youtube video I have seen so far Audi A6 C7 Wymiana zamka (siƂownika) klapki wlewu - YouTube - removal of the insert seems to be hardest bit of job - not sure how those rubber clips work. The override must have worked - the cap is now unlocked all the time and working, but will order a spare soleniod and change it out. Have found a couple of part numbers for my A6 - 8V0862153A or 4L0862153D - but I think the first one is correct for my car. That's the one I am going to order.

I fitted the new solenoid today - the old one - the solenoid was operating - just the plunger was sticking. The 4 clips - covered by rubber have just little clips that need to be forced away from body to release - came quite easy really - never took long once I had that done - should have taken a photo but forgot. Once you have the main part out - changing solenoid is 5 minute job. There looks to be like very heavy corrosion on the solenoid part - which is stopping the black plastic mechanical part sliding to the left to release the spring loaded locking pin at the top right
Given the solenoid is sealed and where it is located inside the rear wing - this cannot be moisture related corrosion - very strange

I did takle a photo once I had split the old solenoid - my mechanical release never worked either audi fuel cap soleniod.jpg

When we service modern VAG products (especially Audi) we regularly see a fault for potential failure of the tank flap and advise replacement before inconvenient failure. It is not a difficult job and the parts are not expensive except with some makes the painted flap is built in which suddenly complicates the issue. It will never be a subject of an official recall as it is not safety related.

Helpful thread!! Have this issue with my Q7 e tron at the moment. Ev charge port door won’t open. Happened a while back but only for a very short period while this seems permanent. Must try a bit of force to release it. Hope it works or I’m guessing it’s an expensive trip to Audi (unless I can argue that it is a common fault)
