Hi everyone , I am currently trying to replace the keybarrel and ignition switch on a 2.0 TDI ,mk 6 Golf , 09. It has been locking up and getting difficult to start ,difficult to stop ,and sometimes the steering lock hard to get off too!

I have managed to get the whole thing off and removed the key and tumbler/aerial ring unit off of it ! I have purchased an after market unit and wanted to mate that back to the barrel and refit!

I think the whole things got sloppy and worn and jams up ? The ignition switch is original and the cars done 190,000 miles so an new switch isnt a bad idea !

Whilst trying to dissassemble the old unit I mistakenly turned the key to the left and the lock shot out . I have recalled seeing somewhere ,that if this happens when the barrels off the column ,it will be impossible to get the lock back off again , as it has a double lock type thing on it ?? Is this right ??

Thanks in advance for any info ,as the whole operation is a bit tricky already !!!

Yes, if you trigger the lock with the barrel out it is game over.

Sorry if this question is a pain , but is that because it just comes out too far and then wont go back ,or is it some cunning trick to render the barrell useless if you took it off the car and tried using it with another key ??

I have never been able to restore one, the manual ELSA says you cannot. When new ones come from TPS, I have had them arrived triggered in the box because someone has played with it and then sent it back to TPS for credit and they put the dead part back on the shelf. When we replace the lock we order a new barrel from Germany set to the cars factory key spec and a new lock.

Thanks again . I am slightly worried now , but time will tell if the barrel I ordered , will do the trick or not !!

It was £48 , so worth a try before anything else gets done !

Fingers crossed ! I dont think restoration is possible either ,in most cases , I know there are one or two videos on You Tube that try stripping and cleaning but the wear on the internal componenets would mean you are better off renewing it anyway , I would have thought !!

I will keep you posted Crasher
