My Girlfriends passat 1.6tdi cayc engine is really acting up lately, fault codes include
P0642, P0340, P0341. also have the traction control light stuck on aswell as tyre pressure moniter. if i clear the codes they come back instantly with ignition on.

at the plug for the camshalft sensor i have pin 1 = 2.5V pin 2 = 5V pin 3 earth

    are these values correct?
i tried ohm testing the sensor but maybe i did it wrong as the multimeter reading just stayed a 1 im new to using one to be honest. ive have a look at the loom

car is in limp mode and can take multiple cranks to start up, sometimes holding the throttle pedal aids in start up but other times doesnt have any effect.

my old boss at garage i used to work at scanned it also with his delphi laptop and said the crank sensor would usually be the p0642 but reckons the cam sensor is shot and timing needs to be checked to make sure its not after jumping a tooth.

    what do you guys think?

With those measurements you made I'd say it was not the camshaft sensor but the most likely cause being a wiring fault. Pin 1 should have 5v at all times ign on. Potential causes are a wiring fault in the loom, another sensor shorted, or ecu failure.

Thanks for your reply, i have had a look for an obvious rubbed part of the shielding but it doesnt seem to have a blatant one sadly, the conduit near the block was worn away slightly but none of the wites were damaged in that area,

so both pin 1 and 2 should read 5v with ign on?

i did have boost pressure / IAT sensor fault and i tee into the earth wire and earth the sensor on a bolt on the block and that cured the fault, i know thats not the correct repair but the car was undriveable and was needed back on the road would this have any relation to my new problem?

Yes they should have 5v, unplugged ign on.

The earth fault may well be linked, it might be what's causing it but it all depends on where these faults are occurring. The wires need to be traced back and repaired properly.

thanks again roverfan, ill relay this info to my old boss, i think ill let him tackle it as he mentioned the ecu could be damaged as the instument cluster was showing all warning lights at one point.

Hope all goes well for you. Both rub throughs on the loom (on golfs 5 and 6 under the airbox low down) and ecu connector crud corrosion (various models) due to blocked drain holes are common reasons for electrical problems and give similar symptoms
