Some movement. The app skipped stage 4 (build in progress) and went to stage 5 (in transit).

Meanwhile, the associated text message said ‘your order has progressed to stage 5a of 7 (left factory - in transit)’.

it’s either a feast or a famine. Another text update this morning saying it’s now at stage 5b (in transit: shipping). As far as I know this means it’s at the port of exit (Emden?) which might put me in the same position as IMZee....

On the Golf 7 (taking the Match Edition, which was a run out special agains the Life) you had to pay extra to get the digital dash (£525) , Lane departure and traffic sign recognition (£565 although you should reduce that by £215 as High Beam Assist is not standard on the 8 - can be done as an OTA update via the Shop for £169) and the upgrade the Navigation to include Guide and Inform plus OTA updates (£795) , these are now standard on all versions yet the price has only increased by about £600. Sure you have lost the folding mirrors and Winter Pack on the Life, but overal the price difference is at worst neutral and probably actually cheaper. Things like Piano Black trim is very much a matter of taste. Originally I did not like it but having had it on both my A6 and now the Golf I am warming to it.

Likewise his dislike of the touch screen is a fair commnet but an issue not soley related to VW (try driving a Volvo V90!) and voice activation addresses many of the issues although I appreciate it may not work in all languages. Also you do not need to slide the temperature or volume controls a tap is sufficient and I cannot remember the last time I actually turned the lights on manually, I just leave it on Auto

Overall I think the 8 is an improvement on the 7

Yay! Got a message regarding a pick up date for the car!

They mentioned that their systems were behind and do not provide accurate information, but anyways I have my delivery booked in for the 27th

I know exactly what you mean. My dad has a s90 and its very dangerous to change fan speed when driving. Although recent updates have improved it, you still have to take your eyes of the road for too long (the screen is not in your eye line but rather you need to look down).

The capacitive temp buttons are a great compromise although nothing beats a dial imo. I hope when i get the golf it becomes muscle memory to change the temp.

Picked up the Mk8 1.5 DSG eTSI Style on Friday.

The car was very well preprared and presented. Contact-free handover with a personalised video highlighting the key features instead of an in-car demo.

    A few pics....

    First Impressions

The 1.5 DSG eTSI petrol is quiet and pretty nippy. If you select 'Consumption' on one of the active info displays it tells you when the car is coasting (with engine off) or operating on two cylinders. Moving between these modes and full 4-cylinder working is imperceptible. A restart from Start-Stop is now much smoother than the 1.4 Golf Mk 7 TSI as it uses the alternator / generator rather than the starter motor.

The active info display is very customisable with a crisp screen.

The car feels a bit taughter and more responsive on the 17" wheels compared to the previous Mk7 on 16s, but ride quality is still excellent.

The Head Up Display is superb. It looks like the info is sitting on the leading edge of the bonnet. It's difficult to get a good photo (at least on a smartphone) but here's a library pic:
    Golf Mk8 HUD.jpg
The central part shows the current speed limit, current speed and any road warning signs that you are approaching or have just passed (eg school, bend, roadworks etc). The left part of the display shows the active cruise control including the set speed, the distance to the vehicle in front (if there is one) and the lane keeping info (it will show a solid or dotted white line on either side of the virtual road). This bit is greyed out if the ACC is disengaged. And the right-hand area shows the navigation information - distance to next turn etc. All very intuitive and helpful.

Fuel consumption seems good, but too early to give figures.

The interior is in Soul Grey and the art velours upholstery and the dark brushed metal dash and door inserts look classy. Am a bit worried about keeping the light grey seats clean, though....

The infotainment is quite intuitive once you get used to it. I know some reviewers have been concerned about the lack of buttons, but in practice, most things are set to automatic (lights, climate etc) and the things you need to adjust either have buttons / levers (heated rear screen, wipers, cruise control) or are easily used (volume slider, radio / media selection). The key driving controls are very smililar in operation to the Mk7, except for the cool DSG which is a switch, rather than a lever.

The only disappointment is no electrically folding mirrors. These have been introduced for the Style in the 2021 model year, but as ours was built w/b 13 July we must have missed it.

Overall, we're delighted, and still getting used to it.

    IS THERE ANYTHING MISSING.....

....from the inside of the rear hatch?
    20200823_104038.jpg
(sorry - not sure how to rotate the photo - it was ok on the phone....)

It looks like a slot for a warning triangle. Maybe these aren't supplied with UK versions - but if not is there a blanking plate missing?

I think so. I’m trying to work out if ours is missing.

Could any other Mk8 owner tell me if the inside of their hatch:
    - has a warning triangle?
    - has a blanking plate?
    - or just looks like my photo above?

    Thanks.
