My 11/2006 Allroad has the original fitted pivoting towbar and has always worked fine with my trailer fitted with incandescent lamp units, however it refuses to illuminate my trailer fitted with LED lamp units. Can a specialist reprogram the trailer module to accept a trailer fitted with LED lamp units? Thanks

So I have done a bit of research. As I suspected the low resistance of LED lights messes with the can bus connections ability to sense the lights. I have found on ebay a CAN BUS trailer adaptor sold by securefixdirect in the UK. This adds resistance to the circuit which supposedly enables the trailer module to power the trailer lights. There is a problem, the seller says that it will fit 95% of vehicles but cannot say which ones, you have to take a chance buying it, at the same time on ebay uk there is a new one for sale from someone who found it does not work with their caravan that they bought it for. Has anyone bought one of these units and used it successfully on an Audi. Thanks.

So, as I promised I can give a review of the securefixdirect LED CAN BUS trailer adaptor bought from ebay. It arrived today. I can confirm that the LED trailer lights do work with this adaptor fitted, however there are two issues, 1/. All lights continually flicker and at varying rates, I do not know how this may be viewed by law enforcement. With my 2002 Sprinter without CAN BUS connected to the same trailer the lights do not flicker at all. 2/. The length of the unit. My Allroad has a factory fitted swing down towbar and socket but it is fitted with a 13 pin socket. The CAN BUS adaptor is 7 pin, so to use this unit I have to have a 13 pin to 7 pin adaptor then the CAN BUS adaptor which is quite long, then the trailer plug connects to it. First impression is that it looks very vulnerable but more importantly it projects so far that on my trailer at least, if you were turning a tight corner or reversing around a bend, the whole of the plug assembly would foul the trailer chassis.
