The stop/start system in my car is not longer working during lockdown. The SS symbol on the driver display is on and there is no error message.

I can only put it down to low battery. I've taken the car out for a good 30 minute drive but SS is still not engaging. Is this because there is not enough energy stored in the battery to active SS?

Would a smart charger like this help? Halfords Advanced Smart Battery Charger Plus | Halfords UK

I haven't had a car with SS before so I wasn't aware that the system required that the battery be charged enough. Otherwise I would have used such a device to keep the battery full.

My car is due for a full health check tomorrow from where I purchased it. I wonder if they will be able to charge the battery and get SS working again.

Are there any other reasons why the SS should stop working? Or is the likelihood that it's because of not enough charge in the battery?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I have the same problem since lockdown. I take the car for a long drive once a week e.g. 80 miles, thinking this will fully charge the battery and sort out the S/S, but it still doesn't engage. I've checked the charge on the battery and although it is a little low before the journey it seems to charge ok and be fine after the journey. I've even turned off everything while driving e.g. A/C to reduce the load but it still doesn't engage. I recently had the car serviced [during lockdown] and there were no error codes.

I'm just thinking/hoping it is a lockdown lack of driving issue that will go away once normal driving resumes.

I have a feeling it is just temperamental because the S/S finally worked yesterday. Was taking my car to the service centre and was going to tell them it isn't working. Stopped at some traffic lights half a mile away from the service centre and S/S suddenly kicked in!

I think low charge and also high outside temperature can affect the system. It was a fair bit cooler here yesterday and my car is parked on the driveway with the sun beating down on it for pretty much most of the day.
