Starts to accelerate, sudden loss off power, NO response from pedal (not even limp home mode), check engine warning light on, higher than normal revs when out of gear.

Had these problems a couple of years now, early on the problem was intermittent, every few days to few months. Tried several solutions, cleaned the ECU box out of damp, replaced the accelerator peddle, and even changed the turbo; after the turbo it was OK for months and it started up again. Found I could set off in higher gears and the fault would rectify, but it's given up the ghost completely now.

Results of the vagcom below, any suggestions?

I have not changed the MAF, and I have seen it could be the gear box or a wiring loom; and the ECU is blanked off.

    Thanks.

I can run it without putting the maf first, then put it on; it is one of the few things, along with examining all the wiring, that I have not done, so for 20 quid, worth a pop.

No much! I have more hair than in an 80's German pop video (never wanted a mullet, got one now) and as I have got older, anything over 18 degrees and I start melting...
