    hi,
frind has a 2005 golf plus 2.0 tdi 158,000 miles
timing belt just changed and turbos blew. ( totally unconnected i think )
new turbo fitted, and within 10 minutes of a 10mph test drive, what sounded like tappet rattle appeared.
i limped back to garage and thats where we are at..

question 1, is the pick up pipe filter/gauze wide enough to let parts of the turbo that could have ended up in the sump thru to block oilway.?
question 2, do you think this is possible.?
question 3, what would you do in this situation ( the sumps getting dropped tomorrow and all cleaned out, pickup pipe being cleaned etc..etc.. )

would you, with an air hose, blow the oilways thru.

    any advice would be good..

    cheers

    andy

Oil pressure certainly comes to mind as the cause of the turbo failure and rattle BUT turbo failure on the BKD engine is very common so when we have them rebuilt we ask the reconditioning company to tell us what they think caused the failure, such as oil starvation, carbon fouling or FOD ingestion so fitting an off the shelf unit removes this valuable feedback. Sludge formation on a diesel is not such a common issue as on a turbo petrol but it does happen. The 2010 CRTDI Passat we have as a loan car came to us with a blown turbo and oil starvation was obvious. With the cam cover and sump removed we could not believe how thick the sludge was and we had to scrub the inside of the head and the lower crankcase with aerosol degreaser and getting the final baked on layer off the inside of the sump required paint stripper, pressure washing and an overnight soak in neat heavy duty truck wash. After reassembly we did three flushes and it was still coming out thick and black.

The switch is in the side of the oil filter and terrible to get at. You need an M10x1 adapter and a 5+ Bar gauge kit, there are dozens on Amazon for less than £20.
