Hi to everyone. I just joined the forum today and i have two questions if someone would know the answers. no 1 Notification showing for an inspectation and oil change in 26 days. I bought the car ten months ago. There is now 36,680 miles on the clock 30,393 when i bought it. I contacted AUDI DEALERS SERVICE DEPARTMENT IN BELFAST to check when the oil was due to be changed. They informed me that according to their records the vehicle was due a major service costing over £400 and the timing belt was due to be changed as the car is 5yrs old. There is only 36,680 on the car. I did not ask if the belt was rubber or a chain. Would the water pump need changed as well. Can anyone advise me if this would be right as the service book with the car shows "toothed belt" to be changed at 130,000 miles.

It is a difficult one, the majority of information VAG supply on the belt is only based on mileage but occasionally certain parts of the workshop system mention age and this is roughly accepted as being every four years up until 2009 and five years from there. With your mileage I would personally leave it until the new year but as your car was made around September as a customer I would HAVE to suggest that as if it failed I would be in trouble, if you want to push it further it is your choice. Yes the water pump must be changed along with a full coolant change. There are two very distinctly different setups used here and to be more accurate I would need the engine code.

Thank you for your reply crasher.A fter several more enquries amongst friends who know about audi cars and also checking with four seperate audi specialist garages i have decided to go ahead and get a mojor service done to my vehicle and along with the service change the timing belt and water pump. It has to be changed every 5 years apparently. I had this confirmed by all four garages. It won,t be due until November 2020 but i am not going to take a chance. P.S. The water pump is an electronic one and the whole lot is going to cost £650 includng collecting and returning the car from and to my home. Booked for the day after tomorrow

I think you made the right choice, especially if you'll keep the car for a year more. The way I view this is that if you're going to do one change in the time of your ownershup there's no harm doing it earlier rather than later for peace of mind. It'll be the same overall cost. If you planning to get rid of it within a year it'd be a bit harder, but showing a future buyer it had been done would help keep the value higher by showing its wwll maintained.

Audi are making it increasingly difficult for owners to access service information. I believe that they are doing this so that you are encouraged to take it to the dealer for work. I have just bought a 2016 2.0Tdi Ultra myself and intend to do all of the servicing myself except things like clutch change. I recently changed the gearbox oil and could not find the capacity anywhere in the very thick owners manual. An internet search was fruitless I guess due to the relatively small number of people doing the work themselves. I also could not find the correct grade. Even the OEM bottle of oil does not mention the grade. I learnt from the dealer that the capacity is 2.5 litres. He could not tell me the grade. I opted for Castrol Syntrans 75w90 fully synthetic GL4 (dont use GL5 for gearboxes!).

Anyway, back to your cambelt. This usefull site states 210,00km.

    Audi A4 2.0 TDI B9

Sounds a bit long but its backed up by a north American maintenance schedule I was able to find online which states 130,000 miles. (screenshot attached - the file was too large to upload. email me at jamespiddington@hotmail.com if you want the file). No mention of any time constraint. So it seems your dealer is telling you porkies when they say it needs to be done every 4 years. Hope this helps.

Thank you Pidders for your information and reply to my query. I can see that the service book says 130,000 miles but when I checked with 4 audi specialists they all told me it was 5yrs no matter about the mileage. I have gone ahead and got the belt and water pump changed plus a major service which included all filters , cabin filter, oil filter, oil change, coolant change, air filter, fuel filter and Ad blue. I was charged a lot less than the main Audi dealer by a mechanic who worked for Audi before going out on his own. I will continue to drive now more confident nothing major will go wrong. Here's hoping. Robert Noel.
