    It may be worth thinking a bit harder about your original turbo ptoblem. Something in engine may have failed and landed debris in turbo's oil feed / bearing causing it to snap. The something might have been a bit of piston ring?

    Did you clean out oil lines and filters, and find anything?

    Difficult to say for 2 reasons. First the glow plugs and electrical connectors on a Pumpe Duse engine are constantly immersed in oil and it is difficult to remove them without some oil coating them somewhere as they are withdrawn from the oily head. Secondly after a turbo failure debris may be present in places it should not be or has been ingested into the engine in different ways. Any problem involving a mechanical shear failure and the oil or fuel systems means that each should be cleaned through thoroughly. There is also a possibility of cross contamination of fuel and oil systems and this could happen in the cylinders, as a result of a failed head gasket or internal failure within the tandem fuel pump driven by the camshaft. There is also the fact that PD engines eat oil constantly in small amounts due to the crankcase venting system feeding excess pressure back into the pre turbo intake. It does not take long for oil vapours to condense in the intercooler system and oil to be forced into the intake, where it is burned as part of the normal combustion cycle. I am assuming ALL filters are new and the intercooler replaced or the original flushed through completely. As VAG Abound states piston ring wear could attribute to the oil being present and 260k is a fair mileage for the original rings to be at.

    Thank you so much. Although on the 1.9 tdi bxe engine the glow plugs are not immersed in oil like the 2 litter tdi.

    I have ordered a compression tester. Will post results as soon as I know. If I find that theres damage inside I probably will order a second hand engine from Germany.

    Of course, I had forgotten that yours is a 1.9 not a 2.0

    So after a compression test here are the numbers:
    1 = 24
    2 = 28
    3 = 28
    4 = 15 bar
    My book says compression should be 25 to 31 and minimum 19.
    Max Difference between pistons should be 5.
    So I have a big problem with piston number 4.
    I am going to remove camshaft first to see if there's any damage first there.

    So I had hydrolock my engine when the turbo broke down. Oil whent into cylinder number 4 through exhaust manifold and my connecting rod got bent.

    Obviously as they run in pairs I changed number 1 rod also.
    A very hard job as I done it on my parking lot with the engine (main block) in the car.
    A hard job but interesting.

    And so you should be as that is a seriously good achievement with what else you have going on right now. I'm sure you feel the same way as I did the first time I swapped out a balance shaft, put the car back together, and started it up to hear the beautifully smooth sound of a correctly running engine. I did this also on my drive, in the cold and dark finishing at 2am as I needed the car for work that day. It is a very good feeling!

    Well done you sir!

    Fair play for doing it yourself in the parking lot and for updating the thread. Well done

    Yes an impressive thing to do, how did you remove the connecting rod from the engine as I'm sure they are fitted from the top through, did you remove the crankshaft?
