My car and turbo broke down whilst I was driving with a noise and the oil disappeared into the pipes that go from the turbo to the intercooler.
I had the car towed home. I took out and cleaned all the pipes, took the oil pan made a visual inspection and cleaned.
Turned the wheels and the engine seemed to turn ok.

I put on a new turbo. I went to start the car and the engine makes kind of a metal strange noise and half of the oil disappeared from the oil pan back to the intercooler pipes. I stopped the engine so as not to damage the new turbo. Any ideas please what is my problem? why does the oil return to the intercooler pipes?

it is a passat b6 bxe 1.9 tdi 2008. Thank you

Was it a new, rebuilt, or direct from another vehicle turbo that you used for the replacement? What manufacturer / source?

You needed to find the specific cause of the first failure and to rectify that issue before replacing other parts. There will be a reason why the oil 'disappears' (I take it you mean the oil level is going down rapidly and seems to be entering the intercooler system again?) so as long as the original cause exists, this issue will return again and again. It is also disturbing to hear that there is a metallic noise which may suggest the engine has been damaged by lack of oil and excessive heat. The BXE also suffers from excessive bearing wear and an inspection of the piston bearing shells is advisable.

After a better analise, there's no metallic noise: it's a very rough idle, and all the 4 spark plugs have oil. it starts every time. I disconnected de exhaust pipe to see if there was oil and its dry. After 5 minutes I check the oil and its back in the carter. I have also disconnected the intercooler to see it here was any oil and it was pretty well clean. No oil came out.
Any ideas? Its weird to have oil in the 4 spark plugs. Thanks.

Isn't that classic symptoms of damaged piston rings and / or cylinder wall? Lack of compression so poor idling, and oil passes by then drains back.

When cleaning things out did yiu find debris in the oil pan? And did you check top of engine where intercooler pipes woukd have taken debris to?

Thanks for your time. There was no debris. It looked ok as per pictures. The Turbo shaft was broken in two. I am going to do a compression test. What I find difficult to understand is all 4 pistons being damaged because there is oil on all 4 glow plugs. But I am inclined to believe that.bt1.jpgbt2.jpgbt3.jpg

Looks very clean and oil free? Has the bottom end been rebuilt? Here's mine - an impeccably maintained engine.
