Our 53 plate 1.6 auto (01M four speed) Golf has recently gone over the 60K miles mark, and the service docs say check the auto fluid levels. But I can't find a definitive view on when it should be replaced. Also, I'm not clear on whether there is a filter fitted to this box.

Thoughts? - my instinct is even if the ATF doesn't degrade much, it has been sloshing around in there for nearly 17 years and replacement might not be a bad thing.

    Thanks!

Not only the ATF but also the diff oil. The filter is behind the sump plate.
