Drivers door unlocking problem help needed please

Hi there Guys & Gals

I have a 8P1 [2003-2012] Hatchback·1.9 TDI Hatchback·1896ccm 105HP 77KW. this is on a 09 plate (March)

When I walk away from the car and press the lock button on the remote all doors lock

If I press the centre button for the tail gate it will open

If I double press the unlock button the passenger side door will open

If I press the unlock button stood by the drivers door I hear it click etc. but can't gain entry.
the only way to gain entry is to insert the key and turn it (I hear it click) then take the key out and open the door.

By the same token if I double press the unlock button the drivers side door will not open

I have looked on the workshop manual schematic and it does not give me any clues.

Has anybody encountered this before ?

A code read will show the lock unit is faulty, a very common problem
