Hi, I have a 1980 LT28 and I want to have the engine replaced. Does anyone know where to start with which engine to go for?

That’s the old 2 litre Audi unit also used in the Porsche 924; in my younger days I used to change a LOT of those and I would only fit VEGE but I doubt they list it anymore and anyway, their quality went down the toilet years ago. Personally I would not touch an engine from ANY of the “reconditioned specialists” in the UK, their work is always to a price and the units more con than recon... if I don’t fit a genuine VAG unit I build it myself but a freak like me building an engine is daft money. I would imagine many of the parts are still easy to get and one modification I used to insist on was the Webcon Weber carb conversion.

You asking about keeping an old bus like this on the road made me think about electric versions os the LT now being made. I see a LOT of old LT’s and Crafters still going strong but what is going to happen when one is ten years old and the battery fails outside of the warranty? A new battery is listed at £22302 now; how much will one be in a decade and how much for fitting? This means a ten year old vehicle like this will get scrapped and this is NOT environmentally friendly!
