Passat will not start, not even turn over

Hi all.

2008, 1.9 TDi diesel estate.

After my recent adventures when she just died she now won't even turn over.

When I push the key I just get a "Zizzzzz" noise from somewhere behind the dash.

I've tried a different, fully charged, battery and that makes no difference.

The usual warning lights come on, then go out (including the electric "steering" one) but then nothing except this "Zizzzzz" noise.

The VCDS log looks horrendous to me with lots of code 1100, cannot be reached.

A hunt around some of the codes suggests relays (poss starter motor) &/or fuses.

Is it multimeter time?

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction to get her sorted.

I would suspect the line 15 relay, I could tell you what and where if you hadn't deleted the VIN serial.

I really need to be at work with the diagram in front of me but your description suggest the line 15 relay (or its trigger circuit) has failed so if you bridge the power terminals of location KL15, the ignition should power up.

Took the relay out and bench tested it - all apparently OK. Heard "clicking" when 12V applied across terminals 85 & 86.

Happy lit up a bulb put into a circuit across terminals 87 & 30.

Nothing except the the Zizzz noise when plugged into the car. Determined that it was the relay making the noise by contorting a finger onto it while depressing the clutch and pushing the key.

Took the relay out and bridged 87 & 30 on the relay board itself and Hey Presto she starts and runs.

Replacement ordered and we'll see if that does the trick.

Totally confused how a relay that does what you expect on the bench does diddly squat when plugged into the car. Modern electrics/electronics I guess.

I have had two Golf 7’s do this now, the relay is behind the glovebox so anyone who has done a Golf 7 cabin filter will have seen it. The symptom is nearly but not completely dead electrics with multiple ECU comms failure when doing a scan. Oddly both cars had damp and mould problems and on both the relay was covered in condensation. I have also had a few Caddy, Golf Plus and Touran’s (both in the workshop and helping other garages over the phone) respond to jumping the relay but a new relay doesn’t work and it is the Body Control Module not commanding the relay.
