    Hello all,

I am soon going to do my timing belt, water pump and rollers on my 2011 A3 Sportback, 2.0 140 engine code CFFB. Reading the manual and forums they say that you have to loosen the cam sproket and high pressure pump sproket when locked in place to be able to rotate them slightly.

I would really appreciate it if somebody could explain why? Surely if you remove a toothed belt, refit the exact same thing, nothing should change?

Or maybe it is just to make the removal, install easier.

I don't know, but love to know as much as possible before doing a job and if I could know the "science" behind these loose sprockets I would be a happy chap.

    Thanks in advance guys

It is to take into account fractional differences between belts so allow in the the tooth spacing between all three points to be optimised and any slack taken up by the tensioner.

Thank you for your reply, so I better loosen them when doing my timing then. Fingers crossed there will be no valve timing issues

Remember that the idler nut and stud, tensioner nut and stud, pump roller bolt and pump sprocket bolts are one time only Torque To Yield and MUST be replaced with the correct specification fastener.

I ordered a Gates KP25649XS-1 kit that seems to have all the bits needed, all will be swaped out. If you don't mind could you give me the torque specs please? I have been seeing different values all over.

If your timing is ok before you re-place your timing belt do not slacken camshafts bolts as long as you have the proper timing tools your belt will slip on & tension up ok
