I've just become the proud owner of a facelift 2.0 A6 SE TDI e Avant.

The previous owner had the cambelt replaced at 75K four years ago. It's now on 125K and given the need for a cambelt change and a couple of other small issues - I was able to get a really fair price.

I know a reputable mobile mechanic that will carry out the work for a fixed price but requested I get the parts.

    I have browsed the forum and google for a couple of hours and picked up a few things but just want to make sure I'm going down the right lines of what to buy;

    Cambelt
    Cambelt tensioner
    Waterpump
    Coolant

Other points I came across were a,
    Thermostat?
    Ancillary belt/belts?

I may make the most of the opportunity and get other service parts whilst the car is off the road.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Seen some really great posts and advice and can't wait to be able to contribute as a member.

    Thanks

Its a good time to change the Aux belt or serpentine belt as some call it.

the official change is 100K for the timing belt, you have at least another 30K before you need to replace it and then your doing it early.

I have the TDIe engine and i have done mine at 80K intervals.

Upto 2009 the interval is 4 years, five thereafter.

So I decided considering the decent price I got the car for and the duration I will be keeping it, that I would go ahead with the cambelt change.

Went through with full timing belt / cambelt kit and waterpump along with auxillery belt and I'm so glad I did.

Here is before photo, the mechanic said it was as if the tensioner was fitted but never tensioned and has probably been like this since last change.

He described the belt as loose and couldn't get across how lucky I was it didn't come off completely.
Reassured there has been no damage from the loose belt just concerning it wasn't done right in the first place.

He gave the car a once over and confirms it is in great condition and well looked after aside from the belt that previous owner wouldn't have known about. Here's a photo after the work was completed.

Got a full LED kit on the way and a few other small modifications. Just can't wait to start using it fully .

That is a near miracle it did not fail. Remember, fitting external LED bulbs to a unit not designed for them is illegal and you will probably need the BCM recoding no matter how “CAN safe” they are supposed to be.

I know I was so relieved once I had seen the photos, it could have been a disaster.

I should have been clearer it's just the internal LEDs I am replacing and audi logo puddle lights.

Aside from rear number plate LEDs but I didn't think these would be an issue?

ANY external LED’s are against the construction and use regulations and an MOT failure, no matter that they are a good idea, especially in really old cars such as Beetles; which REALLY benefit. The problem is, some (many) aftermarket (even OE like Renault) are dazzlingly bright and blinding, to me the idea was just a bright point to attract your attention, not make you shut your eyes in pain until the car has gone past! Maybe it’s just my eyes as I am getting older but I really can’t stand modern car lighting, Range Rovers are so dazzling I can’t see how they got type approval. I have experimented with 501’s in my number plate and side lights and gave up with the number plates as they kept flicking, I don’t think they like the slamming of the tailgate. The front also kept flickering so I have some Phillips ones in there as an experiment but have to take them out when my MOT comes up next month, I shouldn’t be using them but I can’t see how they would upset anyone. I want to get around to fitting some subtle LED running lights but I new seem to have time, always fixing someone else’s car. At the moment my poor Octavia is getting in a bit of a mess and needs some love.

I fitted the error free smd number plate lights along with quattro puddle lights, nice cheap mod with no issues what so ever.

I fitted LED rear number plate lights.
    only one came on.

so put the old ones back in and they both worked again.
    LEDs can be a pain.
