    Hi all.

Changed a friends fuel pump today, after the car has been sat for two months, however, although the engine turns over and diesel is now getting to the engine, the car still won't start.

The glowplugs coil light is also flashing on the dash, so went to check the lights and found the brake lights permanently on, once the ignition is engaged.

Have no scan-tool to get any codes.

My question is, "could the faulty brake switch cause the engine to not fire?"

It is one of those switches which is fitted under the brake master cylinder on a RHD. Looks almost impossible to get to...

    Any help would be appreciated.

Remove fuse 14 in the dash side panel and see if this stops the brake lights staying on.

You think it may not be the brake sensor?

More importantly, would the sticking brake lights (or faulty brake sensor) prevent the car from starting?

A shorted out hall sensor on the brake cylinder can cause all sorts off issues and it can spike the engine ECU directly up two seperate circuits. One side should show the ECU a 12v power signal from fuse SC14 (this also goes to the body control module for the brake lights and the ABS ECU) and the other side should show the ECU juust a power signal; basically this shows the ECU two inputs when you press the pedal. This hall sender is supplied with an earth, if the hall unit burns out internally (as they do) it could send some unhelpful signals out so removing fuse SC14 may stop the brake lights coming on. It makes more sense to replace the master cylinder with the revised version than spend only a few £'s less on just the sensor and sometimes the master cylinder is melted.

    Fair enough.

As this is not my car, I just went to have a look and there is no side panel fuse box.
There is the engine bay one as well as a smallish one under the right hand side of the steering wheel, below the two relay panels.

    Thanks for the input

Unable to find a fuse diagram for this vehicle, I've just checked every fuse I can find.

In the fuse panel under the steering wheel all were present and correct except for fuse 14. Seeing as one of the fuses had been placed into an unused slot, it was inserted into F14 fuseway.

None of that affected the situation, so far.

The only other fuse/relay box is next to the battery under the bonnet.

Fuse 14 is also absent here. In fact several fuses are absent.

Removing F10 turns of the flashing glow plug and rear brake lights and the annoying siren in the engine bay.

Really do need a fuse layout diagram as I have no idea if these were even ever present?

This car was recently in a garage and they said they couldn't find why the car wouldn't start. In fact the fuel pump had failed, which I changed two days ago, only to encounter this situation.
It is not beyond the realm of possibility for the garage to have neglected to replace these fuses.

No amount of searching online brings up the illusive fuse arrangement for the 2006 Golf Plus 2.0 TDi

But, progress. managed to get the brake lights to go off without changing the sensor. By replacing missing fuses.

Found some fella on Zoutube with the same car, AND manual.
Unfortunately he was waving the manual around too fast and out of focus to read the details, but he did film the engine compartment box, which enabled me to see which fuses were inserted where (at least on his).

Still won't start, still have the flashing glow plug light...

And now have, "EMISSIONS" "ENGINE FAULT - GARAGE"

    Update.

NO LONGER have the flashing glow plug light.

    Woohoo!

But "Emissions" is on the panel and the car still won't start.

At least know the brake light switch doesn't stop the car starting, as it wasn't changed in the end.

Gonna start a new thread as this one is finished.

I missed it was the bulbous Plus, these use a different electrical system to a proper Golf, it is more like the Caddy and Touran... lord knows why they needed two different systems? No you won't find a fuse list that is accurate, you have to work it out from the multitude of different levels and revisions of diagram. Guessing this is a BKD engine and manual box the box in the engine bay is called SB and the panel on the front of it with the strip fuses is SA, the one under the dash is SC so you have pulled SB10. The engine wiring systems ran upto May 2005 then until May 2006 when it changed again so we need the date of manufacture so PM me the reg. In either case pulling fuse SB10 shuts of the power feed from the battery which power the main line 30 relay which is commanded by the engine ECU relay so that is not going to hep... you need diagnostic equipment.
