2008 Passat 1.9 TDi Estate just died - twice

Hi all,

A bit of a problem

.

Car has just completely died at some traffic lights. No warning, no warning lights, just stopped running.

Disconnected the battery, left for a minute or so, reconnected and she fired up.

A mile later on while parking she did exactly the same thing again. Battery disconnected again and managed to get her parked up.

Battery disconnected voltage 12.8V

Battery voltage with engine running 14.2V

Warning lights now on: Steering & Traction Control

Fuel filter last changed Nov 2015 @ 106K

She's got an aftermarket radio without the CAN adapter so that's why this can't connect.

There's no engine fault codes. Erm......

From the Ross Tech site Code 0778 gives:

I can't see how the steering stuff would make the car stop running. Or am i missing something?

Unfortunately I don't understand what I need to do next with the Steering Angle or if this is actually what caused the car to stop running or is a result of it, not the cause.

I was wondering if it was something to do with tickover as both "dying" episodes happened on tickover??

Do I need to delve further into VDCS diagnostics? Or something else?

Help and suggestions gratefully received.

I think most of your faults have been brought on by disconnecting the battery.

You need to restore basic settings for steering, which should just need a drive giving it full lock in both directions.

Otherwise follow the Ross-Tech procedure.

Your original problem could be an intermittent in-tank fuel pump.

When it fails again try giving the tank a good thump, then listen for the pump running for a couple of seconds when the ignition is turned on.

It was all a bit odd as after she stopped the key did nothing. I took it out completely, tried again, still nothing. Did that a couple more times, still absolutely dead. No sounds, no "trying" to start, nothing. Have to admit I didn't listen for the pump

Disconnected the battery and at least she fired up.

Hope it's not the fuel pump as I gather they are pretty expensive and not a joy to fit.

The steering sensor is because you disconnected the battery, a couple of lock and hold lock to locks and a quick drive normally shuts it up. How old is the battery? I am finding the 2006>2010 3C to be extraordinarily fussy about the battery, our 2010 loan car does all sorts of odd things if the battery voltage drops too low from short trip work... in fact it is completely dead somewhere at the moment, the person who had it broke it and I haven't got time to go fetch.

She went on a shopping trip last night and everything worked fine. All the warning lights have gone including the steering one. I'll run a scan in the next couple of days when it stops raining for 10 minutes.

I don't know about the battery as it's the one I bought her with. I'll keep a close eye on it and I've a spare, fully charged, 096 so I might swap them over to see if that makes any difference.

I change the fuel filter at the same time I do my 9500 mile oil service as they are only around a tenner these days, less as I get a few at a time when on offer. 34,000 since a fuel filter change is quite a gap, for me at least. I'd change the fuel filter too but at 140k+ I'd join philipharmes with the in tank fuel pump theory as a lot give in during the 2nd 100k of the car's life. Failure of this pump can be preceded with intermittent cut outs and non starts until it finally won't run anymore. Fairly easy change and around £75 to silly money for a new unit. There are a couple of different types (2 port, 3 port) so it is important to get the right replacement.
