For what's its worth since the fault can disappear its unlikely to be a fuse but water on boards/water damage can cause these types of issues

The earth wire is a 16mm which is in pin 2 of the 2 pin plug. It comes out of the plug and is connected to the left chassis leg underneath near the rear lower arm. Whether yours has been ripped off at that point and has had a new wire put in back to the battery i dont know. But thats how elsawin shows it and i have seen it on mine too.
check the gauge of the replacement earth wire; it should be the same thickness as the old one.
you say it runs back to the battery? what all the way back under the car into the wheel well to the battery?
Check the other comms wires in the plug and make sure the contacts are clean and not corroded

had my local garage take a look. That earth wire that Morski said should just connect back to the body does NOT!! It looks like it was deliberately unplugged and taped up. There appears to be another earth wire that runs right back to the battery. They also mentioned there are 3/4 trigger wires which run into the wing and into the engine bay; maybe one of them is broken??

the fault disappeared on my way there and in hindsight i should left the ignition on as we may have been able to talk to the steering module.

The garage have given me the car back and told me to grab some codes if and when the fault disappears; looks like I’ll be carrying my laptop for the foreseeable unless anyone can shed any further light?

Check fuse no 1 on the black holder drivers side.
Are you seeing a power fault or flexray fault?

Yes thats whats happened; it’s NOT connected to that earth point behind the rear lower arm on the front passenger wheel

That is what the garage said to me

they disconnected all the plugs on the rack and cleaned them all up; there was no sign of oil or water ingress in them so can only assume the module is ok and the fault lies within the wiring somewhere?

in the engine, abs, central electronics, instruments and can gateway it’s showing a missing message fault due to lack of comms with the power steering module The power steering module itself is saying it cannot be reached

when the fault first occurred back in November last year i was able to grab a code and it was saying it had insufficient voltage

I think you might need to start investigating the wiring...
