    Hi Everyone,

My auto tailgate has started to play up. You used to press the external button once and the tailgate automatically opened fully. Now you press it once but it only opens but doesn't lift at all. Press the button again and it only opens 3/4 open not quite fully open. Press the close button on the underside and it closes fine.

Thanks for all your advice in advance. I very much appreciate you taking the time to respond.

There is a reset procedure, and an adaptation procedure to set the maximum height the tailgate will open. I think it's in the owner's manual, but I think Googling it produces results.
If this doesn't work, it may be worth pulling off the roof trim and inspecting the motors and linkages for anything that has seized, come loose or broken.

It does this sometimes, usually on a warm day or if she is transversely tilted. Also if the gas springs are reaching their end of life.

My 2013 Avant started doing this about 4 years ago. When pressing the fob, internal button or external release you could hear the lock release but the tailgate did not always open. Sometimes when it did, it only opened half way. It was possible to force the tailgate gate open and reset the close switch by holding it down until it beeped. It would then work properly until it had been sitting overnight, when it would go back to square one.

The car went in for a service at an Audi dealership. It produced an error code which prompted them to change the close switch at a cost of about £100. Everything worked for about a year and now the problem has returned.

I find pressing the external button and "encouraging" the tailgate with a little upwards pressure enables it to work properly. So I just live with it. It's the only thing that has gone wrong over 7 years of ownership so I forgive it.

By the way, replacing the switch doesn't look too difficult and the part is cheap if you can be bothered.
