New to this love the car its simple and a nice drive, but its drinking oil .starts fine until it warms up then sluggish off n on until it blows out blue smoke and its ok again then a while later does it again!! Idles fine ish for a old car.was going to change the pcv valve but cannot find one anywhere only second hand ones which is risky!! Any ideas if its the pcv or something more serious its losing about 1ltr every 70 miles so very excessive

Any external oil leaks? Take a look from underneath to see if it has been leaking in some place(s). Also check for signs of vacuum leak around the pcv outlet hose although unlikely as a cause but simple enough to check.
This would be checking for signs of excessive crankcase pressure rather than suspecting an external oil leak as the cause.

Pcv needs vacuum testing but if that is not available open the filler cap after a warm blast. See if the pressure released feels excessive

If the camcase pressure is OK, the pcv is likely doing its job. Do the same test (after warm blast) this time with the dipstick. If the pressure released feels excessive here then you have a pressure differential between the crankcase and camcase.

The PCV valve is VW part number 03D103765F and costs £36.38 from a VW dealer, it is on the back of the timing case and retained by two 5mm socket cap M6 screws. I hope this works because if not it is rings and technically speaking these cannot be replaced as no parts are available.
