I believe that the a1 is made of predominantly aluminium therefore the magnetic L plates advertised wouldn’t work but I do not want the adhesive ones due to possible paint damage, any other ideas ?

The vinyl ones that stick to glass. One in uppwer corner of passenger front or wherever doesn't obstruct vision, and one on rear window.

Body panels are still steel so magnetic will work.

The only aluminium shelled cars Audi made/make are the A2 and A8
