I recently bought a 2007 Audi A6 with the 2.0 TDI (140bhp) BRE engine, but I've noticed a loss of coolant and have read that the EGR on these engines can leak the coolant into the engine, so I'm looking to delete the EGR entirely to see if this fixes the issue.

I've noticed that there's two types of EGR delete kits around, one with just blanking plates and one which seems to be like a replacement pipe (see attached image).

What's the difference between the two kits? One is quite a bit more expensive...

You could bypass the coiling circuit for a short time to see if the water is going into the cooler as driving on the road with the EGR valve off is illegal.

That's a good idea! So I can just use a 19mm joiner pipe to connect the coolant pipes for a while and check the coolant levels after a few days. Is it definitely safe to run the engine like this?

You should keep the loading down, preferably not running using a cooling system pressure tester. Put the engine under hard load with no coolant flowing to the cooler could damage it and will increase emissions.

In what sense? It is a genuine engine code in the A6 I believe?!

    Thanks both! That's awfully worrying!

Which engine is the most reliable in the A6 C6 range - as now I'm tempted to sell this on with the issues highlighted rather than keep it and spend money on it, once this lockdown is over... I really don't want a money pit right now unfortunately!

With the balancer shaft dealt with and a new set of rod bearings I would say the 2L TDI as the V6 TDI's can be a nightmare if they have timing chain or injector problems plus turbo and later models having DPF problems. If you could find one, a well looked after 2L EA113 engine petrol for me, EU 4 emissions so ULEZ compliant but the EA113 has VVT issues, to honest I would not recommend any of the where reliability is concerned now they are getting old. The worlds obsession with Co2 has made many engines a nightmare when they go wrong.
