My B8 Passat 2.0tdi 150 Business engine cut out in the rush-hour traffic and took several starter crankings to restart and drive away. I was left baffled by this as the car only has 28,000 miles on the odometer, and was serviced by my local VW garage 3 weeks ago. From there onwards, the car drove well and still does today.

Does anyone have experience with this? I am scared that this may recur and cause a serious accident and damage the car. Please share.

Speculating on what could have caused this is virtually impossible.

Suggest you get someone with VCDS, either a local Diagnostics specialist or someone local on here who has VCDS & willing to scan it for beer tokens.

Once you have a code we will probably be able to help you further.

That has the hallmarks of a failing crank speed sender, known as the G28. This MAY or even if it is faulty it MAY NOT come up on a proper VAG specific diagnostic scan but it is a common issue. At £74.74 even for a genuine one they are not expensive but they are an evil sod to fit.

Thank you for your kindness in sharing with me what might be the problem. It makes a great deal of sense to me that the crank speed sender (CSS) might be the culprit. I am encouraged to know that it may not cost an arm and a leg as some parts can be very expensive. I am still pondering where to start. I think I will search online the location of the CSS and see if I can't remove it before I buy a replacement.

It is evil to replace, you have to remove the entire oil cooler assembly from the block (so new bolts and gasket) and can only be done from below, on your back would be awful. Then you access the 4-mm hex cap head screw at an angle using a ball end hex key and if you round out the screws head it's box out, flywheel off, sump off and fit a new sensing ring with the highly expensive special tool so DO NOT round out the screw!

Crasher, Thank you for being the bearer of such 'bad' news. This problem is suddenly taking the form of a nightmare of the worst kind. You did warn me though, but I was naive. Having fitted the replacement of the oil-pump driving hexa-pin for my B6 2 years ago, I thought I could do this. I am not so keen anymore. However, it looks like this job will be expensive even if I hand it over to VW. I think I will pause and take stock of what I need to do. Thank
goodness the car is still working without a recurrence of the fault. I hope it lasts till I can deal with it. Please don't give up on amateurs like me.

I'd let the professionals do it and make it their responsibility to do it right. Just my opinion.
