I think my rear diff my be goosed. There is a whining noise coming from the rear of the car, and the fuel economy has dropped by about 10mpg. The brakes and the centers of the hubs are not hot at all, so I don't think it is a dragging brake, or a wheel bearing. However the rear diff is very warm. I am not sure that it had ever had its oil changed. It was pretty dirty, mostly with what I think was oil that had seeped out of it over the years and collected a nice layer of dust on it.
I gave it a jetwash so I could find the fill hole and then did an oil change. I took it for another spin, five miles up and down the road. The whining noise was not as bad as it had been, but the fuel economy was still low. When I got home I felt underneath and the diff was really quite warm.

I am guessing that once it has reached this stage, repair is not that easy or even possible. Is there any point me taking it apart and trying to restore it?

I can find two numbers on the outside of the diff, one is stamped into the bottom of it and the number is DAJ25 116. The other is cast into the left hand side of the diff and it looks like it is 01R 525 053C. I have done searches on the internet for both of these numbers but it is not throwing up any rear diffs for sale.

Does anyone know where I might get hold of a rear diff? Anyone happen to have one that they want to get rid of?

I have attached some pics of it for you .

    Thanks

    Hi Russell

Thanks for that link, it looks like it would work.

Looking at eBay there are loads with the part number 0AR525053E and the second letter on the stamp on mine is not that clear, I thought it was a 1 but it could be an A. If mine is a 0AR525053E then would any with that part number fit? they seem to have been used on quite a range of Audi's and VW's. I could get a much newer one with much lower milage if it hasn't changed at all.

Does anyone know the history of the rear diff?

    Thanks

    Phil

I think the 3 letters are the important thing. You could check out the correct part number here Audi A4/S4/Avant/quattro (A4Q) Audi EUROPA spare parts, All modifications of the model Audi A4/S4/Avant/quattro EUROPA

Yes ignore the part number as they are casting numbers and go with the three digit code, the numbers after are the date so 25th November 1996 in your case. 01R signifies the design series but the DAJ is an 01H so must share parts, the CKH diff is the same.
