My 1998 2.4 saloon FWD will not start. Not a sound from the starter when turning the key. I've tried with spare key, the same. Funny thing though, with a battery booster it started right away. So, I replaced the battery since it was kind of old and had low voltage even when fully charged, but it didn't change anything. Still total silence.

Thought I should test if starter gets power (terminal 50) from the ignition switch, but I can't even get to the connector. Tight. What's the procedure for replacing the starter? I would love to have the right sequence. Thanks.

You can always test at the starter. Since you hear no sound at all it still leaves the possibility the signal is not reaching the solenoid.

(Take precautions the vehicle will not move forward if the starter operates, protect yourself from possible arcing/shorting of the starter to its body)

It is alternator off first and then you can get at the starter, I havn't done one in years but it is a painful job and if I had to do it on the deck I simply wouldn't! manual or auto?

@Roverfan Yes, I thought it was a good idea to test at the starter first (terminal 50) to check for signal from the ignition switch, but it's insanely hard to access.
    Thanks for your advice.
@Crasher It's an auto. I have the Bentley Publishers manual and all it says is to disconnect battery terminal, starter and solenoid wires, then remove starter mounting bolts and lift out the starter. Easy peasy, right? Not. Since I'm working on the deck I think I'll give this one to the repair shop. Thanks for your advice.
