right so ill start my story with the missus needed a new car, i steer her away from bmw and audi due to chain and oil pump issues. got her to settle for a nice clean 10 plate passat 1.6 tdi.

so i test drive it all is well bar a rear shock bush lovely, bought it, drove it home 1.5 hour journey flawless.

day two, i was driving it up a bit of a hill and noticed the temp gauge started creeping up past the 90C was almost home so when i got home i topped it off with coolant about 500mls, checked for leaks no obvious ones anyway no drips on driveway. took it for another drive and the temp gauge is still creeping up it gets up to just under 120C and the rad fans kick in and bring the temp back down to 90C. after this i topped it off again only a little required.

left it over night no coolant lost and drove it circa 30km and was fine no overheating. so headed home again on the way i stopped off at a mechanic friends garage explained the situation to him and he reckoned it was an airlock that more than likely is after pushing out itself, i thought great left for home up a slight hill near top checked gauge up around 110-115C again heart well and truely sank it was up and down the all the next 20km until i got home and checked coolant levels still on max mark rad fans were on until temp dropped to 90C.

thats my story any input on where to start would be great? common issues that cause this? ive done a lot of googling and it doesnt seem like these passats overheat often.

    Thanks

Is the interior heater working well?
When the temperature gauge is over 90 it should be pumping out endless hot air.

If not, I would say you either still have an airlock somewhere or the water pump impellor has failed.

last night the heaters were weak as if the car was only at around 70C not 90C ambient temperature was 1 degree tho but they are working good today they feel about right but the gauge is still showing above 90C at times, if the heaters are on they dont seem too get any hotter.

it was suggested to me to check flow on the small pipe on top of the header tank with the car at idle and it does have flow at an average speed, i was told my waterpump should be on if there is flow here?

what are the chances the temperature sensor is faulty?
    thermostat sticking?

the car appears to b losing no coolant and its been driven about 150kms today

Your'e right about the little pipe, if there is flow then the pump should be ok.

Perhaps check again when it is overheating as these impellors can be intermittent.

That pipe is also where the air bleeds from so there shouldn't be an air lock.

Also check if the main rad is hot at the bottom when overheating.

PS. Be very careful when the cooling system is hot as it will be under pressure.
When the temp gets above 100c it will start to boil if you release the pressure cap.

thanks for your reply phil, yesterday i serviced the oil it was bad and filter was collapsed, since then the oil temps are down about 20C, today i flushed out the rad and heater core, the rad wasnt too dirty but the heater core had a heap of gunk in it along with stuff like grit which appears to be inside the rubber hoses also.

anyway i have refilled with coolant and burped it for a while topped it up and while it sat there burping i had the heater on max and about half and the temp gauge only managed 70C but i digress, took it for a drive then got up to 90C nice heat from inside but the problem persists the gauge sneaked up to 100C but no further which is an improvement of sorts, it may still have a bit of air in the system so will go for a longer drive when she gets back with it (dont worry shes only about 2 miles away cant do too much damage)

I havent been on in ages but i was supposed to update this a while ago, i removed the thermostat i bought new in vw dealers, the car has stopped overheating but now it is never getting up to temp yes obvious i know. This was fine over the summer but im going to have to sort it out for winter.

I have tried putting the dealer thermostat into a pot and gradually boiling it and ive found it quite slow to open at all let alone fully im guessing its faulty.

So my question is do i buy another O.E thermostat or will i cheap out this time and get a parts store one? Maybe lower temp?

Engine Being cold is ruining fuel economy already so it can only get worse and the dpf light is rearing its head now and again.

    Slower to open is hotter
The engine runs very cold, especially at idle and or if you have heaters on.

Hi rover fan, the actual thermostat now isnt fitted to the car, crasher suspected head gasket trouble but since ive removed the stat the car never really gets beyond 70c on gauge at least. But during the winter with no thermostat will be a night mare but im unsure will i go oem again or just cheapo one maybe 82c instead of 92 if possible.

I see, the choice is finely balanced. The 82c doesn't seem too bad a solution if it stops the overheating for you as well as giving you some heat.
If a more aggressive flush gets more gunk out, I'd go with oem. I take it the first flush made it better, so I'm thinking it could be that

Right a final update i hope, i got a new thermostat and i fitted it car. still overheating when pushed up hill ect, solution i drilled 6 3mm holes around the the thermostat evenly spaced on either side of the bridge im going to call it. This has worked, car gets up to temp and holds it, doesnt start lifting the needle when going uphills in high gear anymore. Delighted now
