in a previous car I sorted a drive issue by opening up and cleaning the optical laser reader and a good clean of all sliding components.
So when the wifes sat nav packed up not reading the disc I was hopeful.
Having got into it, I have found a metal disc obviously part of the locating mechanism from the centre of the drive loose and laying on the laser reader. This photo is the way it was laying looking down, so it must go on the top or bottom of the centre locating part...I do not know which, also how it was fixed.....there are no other loose parts in the unit.
    I have a photo of itDSCN1873.jpg

Can you jeep it plugged in to see what happens with the case off? Dors that disc have a v-edge to taje a drive rubber band? Is it heavy enough to perhaps be a flywheel to keep an even reading speed?

Strange that there's no where obvious for the centre hole to mount, etc. Why line it with a sleeve if not needed?

Thanks VAD-abound. I now have managed to remove the top plate from the drive and can see the wheel/disc should fit on there with a plastic bushing so it spins. The plastic has worn away totally so it falls off and the CD does not locate to be read.
I need a scrap CD drive from an RNS-E if anybody has one with that top plate/wheel....or a new plastic bush which I guess is not obtainable haha! I will post pictures late.

Should it be a click fit on there then, or some sort of friction? Post pic of how it should fit to help.

Small hole in middle of "stub" if there is one with screw in it to spread walls, or to hold a washer that keeps disc on maybe? Nylon machine screw through lid to make new stud?

EDIT: Looks like a reasonably common problem. Google "RNS-E repair".

Thanks, I will take a look at others findings, but I did not think I can make my own repair with washers etc.....the hole needs to be there for the lower part of the drive to clamp the disc and locate. I have just re-inserted the unit to the car so it has radio etc, but the sat nav cd needs sorting.
it is difficult to see exactly what the nylon part looks like, but it seems to locate and be held into the top plate with a little bracket and screw I removed to retrieve the remains. The other half looks like a press fit in the metal disc.

The inner workings are often an off the shelf component. If you have old PC, games console, etc DVD drives around there's a chance you'd find same inside.
