1.4 TSI 160 Mk6 cylinder compression misfire HELP

Hi guys if anyone can advise I'd be extremely grateful.
Mrs has a Mk6 golf 1.4 TSI 160bhp on an 09. Cars been good until management light flashed on 2 Fridays back. She took it in and the garage scanned it and said no faults and seems ok. Bring back if the light stays on or you notice anything. So a few days on thhe trot the light flashed on and car driving ok until this Tuesday when she said it felt underpowered. Car went into garage on Thursday and hoped for coil pack/plugs to fix. They tried the coil pack and made no diff they say one cylinder is running at about half compression. Car starts and drives for a few mins then light flashes on and goes off. Oil temp seems to get to temp quick and you can see watching the exhaust, a misfire. Garage doesn't want to touch it and another I called said the same. Not worth the money trying to fix. Maybe a valve and maybe a piston.

Anyone think it's worth another opinion or had the same issue? What would a replacement cost roughly ? Car has 60k and is mint condition. Pains me to think we can't get something for it or get it up and running for less than its worth. Although reading up it seems to be a common thing with this 160ps version of the engine.

CAVD code engine? Broken piston or two... just finishing one in a Scirocco and have to take another in a Beetle apart next week after I have two days off from repairing 1.4 TFSI engines... absolute pieces of junk. This is one of the two destroyed pistons from the Scirocco.

Hi Crasher. Great! So it is a common thing with this engine. Any ideas what a replacement or repair would cost? Or am I better selling it for spares and repair on eBay?

The Beetle and Scirocco will come out at around £5k.

Ouch. I've had a couple of prices for engine replacement of 1750 and 2250 but not sure how reliable a replacement is. Shame can't repair our engine. I assume that the car will mot pass not with a misfire, due end March?

You can’t even buy the parts for what you have been quoted. If it was not being rebuilt by a VAG technician then the only option I could suggest is a genuine exchange VAG unit which we considered for both the Scirocco and Beetle but decided that at £4746.35 delivered to us in a crate, rebuilding the originals in situ was more cost effective. You need a VAG specialist to help you, these types know and love the marque VAG and will be able to help you, there are lots of us all over the UK so search for one near you.

A replacement doesn't have to be a rebuild though. Taking a working engine from an accident daamaged vehicle is a lower cost fix, as long as it really is OK and codes into the car. I expect that's what OP has been offered.

Second hand engines are very often a disaster and in the case of a 1.4 TFSI I would not even consider it and anyway, we simply refuse to fit second hand engines and gearbox's, over the last 36 years we have had or fingers burnt far to many times. It wasn't such an issue when it was a Golf 1, 2 or 3 but modern engines are so complex just undressing the old and dressing the new engines is a huge job and a used engine is likely to have had many parts removed for separate sale. Not only that but with these engines, they can seem fine until warm and the Beetle outside has 54K miles on it with a full dealer service history, if that was in a scrap yard, it could fool anyone.

I don't disagree. Just mentioning it as a rationale for why the price can be different. Lots of risk though, especially in a model known to have weak points. It's a chance I'd take to keep a decade old car running if I could see scrapper it was coming out of, and especially if I saw it running in old car.
