    Hi all, newbie here.

Got a Mk6 (I think, 60 plate?) estate Golf B/motion. RCD 310, no BT, already fitted, but would like to fit RNS510 or similar, as I'm fed up with having to find the Garmin and plug it in all the time. I have a sneaking suspicion that just removing this and slotting in a 510 will not magically make sat nav and BT function. What other bits do I need to fit to make it work? Do I need a special aerial for GPS etc?

Also - how simple is it to change the Aux input under the elbow rest to a USB?

I'm competent with electrics and common sense, but just need some friendly pointers. Cheers.

    Simon.

Some combinations of radio and controller on the car can cause battery drain, so read up on that. Many of the RNS units on eBay also have what look like "refreshed" stickers to me. I'm not sure if this is something like sellers putting stickers on that reflect a software upgrade that they've done rather than the underlying hardware. Can't recall if it is software or hardware level implicated in battery drain.

It wasn't until quite late that the RNS navigation understood full UK postcodes, and being taken to "MK1 4" is nowhere near as useful as "MK1 4AB". Overall route planning and management is good enough, but very dated experience compared with standalone sat nav. I quite often put my phone nav on alongside it if going somewhere new...

If you do fit it then you'll need GPS aerial. In car headliner prob best, but behind dash seems to work for many.

RNS doesn't provide Bluetooth itself. You need a telephone adaptation module. These are another challenge area to get a device that will connect with your phone and car and give the functionality you want. You'll probably be OK with 2010 vehicle, but older dash controllers didn't work fully with newer telephone modules that gave a good experience with modern Android / iPhone. You'd probably also want to run proper mic from roof light slot to RNS.

Finally you'd need a bit of car coding with VCDS or similar to tell things to work properly.
