Hi, I am fixing an audi A1 on which the passenger airbag has gone off and the seatbelt has locked.

I have managed to get a new dashboard and airbag as well as the setbelt and also an airbag controller.

what I want to know is if the airbag controller needs to be coded or is it a straight plug and play?

Also, I have seen companies that offer airbag controller resets for the existing controller - would this be a better option?

    thanks.

I'd go with advice like this: Airbag Coding - Ross-Tech Wiki. Given what you're doing buying a VCDS cable and selling it again once the car is sorted may be a decent investment.

I've made some progres with this since the post, And I did end up buying a ross tech cable

I swapped the controller as I had a spare one but I now believe I didn't need to as the same errors were there.
I am still getting seat belt igniter errors for both front seatbelts, which I have replaced but the errors still come back once reset.

When I plug in a airbag test module instead of the seat belt igniters then the fault goes away, so I'm not sure whats going on here...

What was the source for the replacement igniters? And control module? Perhaps also involved in an incident?

I got the igniters and the control module with a complete airbag kit to replace my ones with.
I also bought another igniter seperately and got the same error with that as well...

I suppose it could be that all the igniters I got hold off were faulty orhad gone off..

What errors does your VCDS show for them? What part codes have you ended up with?

If it's a resistance too high error it may just be a wiring / connector issue. I ended up removing one of the two connectors between chassis and airbag on our car to get things into spec.

Yes, its a resistance too high error.

where was this connector you removed to get yours resolved?

On the Touran there is a loom to the door pillar and then a connector to underseat. Then a connector under the seat to airbag in side of seat. I removed the one at door pillar, but given the overall strain relief planning, etc for sliding seats backwards / forwards it may be better to remove under seat one.

Removal was cut out connectors, use clear sleeved crimp & shrink splices, and wrap in yelllow insulating tape as per VAG spec. You may find tbat if A1 is same and uses same connectors at each stage you can temporarily stretch chassis loom to airbag to bypass middle chunk and get error to go away due to lower resistance.

I satisfied myself it was really a resistance issue rather than terminal controller failure by using a bit of pencil lead as variable resistor beforehand. I have a thread 2-3 years ago about it. Your tester may have established the same thing.
