    Just got a 2008 A4 2.7tdi multitronic with proven 120k miles for a decent £2500

    First impressions are:

Engine is very quiet for a diesel
It never gets up to temperature.. (blows hot air ok)
Its not very good on Diesel ~35mpg
    Got no savnat DVD? help?
Drivers door locks but doesn't open from outside?
    It's been remapped..

I'm looking to get this car sitting as it should be it has 20 inch wheels on it which will be sold asap.. any help or advice is much appreciated

    Hi!

First of all, I would probably get the Multronic oil in the gearbox changed - unless it has been done at least once? I think it should be every 40 - 60K miles.
2nd - If the engine does not seem to get up to temp, the first thing to do would be to change the engine temp sender (which I think sits on top of the engine in the V near the oil filter? (it did on the 2.5 V6 Tdi). That is a 10 minute DIY job. If no change after that, then maybe the thermostat has gone. THe low temp reading for the engine would explain the crap MPG, as it thinks the engine is cold al the time.
3rd - it takes a while to get used to driving a diesel - your MPG will improve as you can coast more. Low revs work best, but do stretch it every now and then.
4th - The VAG V-Diesels are quiet. And have a good 'heavy' sound to them which I really like. My V8 Tdi has a deep lusty sound to it!
5th - Does your car have Sat Nav? If you can find the drive for it, check the Disc is fine. The previous owner might have removed it..... Others Ebay can be your friend.
6th - Pass on the door locks - but when locked you don't want to open from the outside (I know, you probably meant UNlocks.....)
7th - What makes you think it is remapped?
8th - Wheels - have a look in the manual or fuel filler cap for the wheel and tyre size combos available. Ebay again can be your friend. Also, looking at the build sticker in the manual and in the spare wheel well will have the build codes and that will tell you what wheels and tyres came with the car. There is a site you can go to (or a spreadsheet you can download somehwere) that states what the 3 letter codes are.

    Hope this helps!

Oh, and only use Shell or BP diesel. The others stations sell crap.
I realised at an early stage in my driving years and haven't looked back (nor used any others)

Thanks for the info! I will check the temp sender and replace,
there is no satnav dvd so i will ebay for that,
yes i mean when the cars unlocked i cant open from outside,
the previous owner told me it had been and it does go hard but as of yet i'm not sure it is going to be of benefit to the car in the long term being multitronic..

Its helps a lot i will be on a mission to improve my understanding of this engine!

Temp sensor wise - if you go to the GSF or Eurocarparts sites, they will be able to advise when you type in the Registration number of your car.
Also, check the colour of the sensor that is fitted already. Removing the connector will allow you to see the colour, you will then know which to get as there are always many options!

Hi Guys, i replaced the coolant temp sensor, on my engine it is 2 of the same screw in style sensors one top of the engine and one below the turbo, easy enough to do. Problem still exists i'm coolant temp never exceeds 55 degrees starting to think i could have a stuck open thermostat...

Any advice or guides on how to change it without much hassle?

Ok thermostat now changed and I am up for an average of 48mpg, I think I will try a fuel economy remap on her and see what it goes up to. Btw I now love this car, so smooth to drive and quiet great car with the addition of Vogtland Springs.
