Hi all, had some advise on here recently and it was much appreciated. I have a mk5 golf 2008 gt tdi 140 with an economy map to 168. I only bought the car a few weeks ago and although it drives perfect with no smoke etc the low rev whine/siren is worrying me so I think I will replace the turbo to be on the safe side.
I am not really keen on the recon route and would like to buy from darkside as they seem legit. To cut a long story short is the Melett turbo ok as it is considerably cheaper than the garret?
Any and all advise is welcome and appreciated.
    Kind regards
    Neil.
P.s long shot but I live in Cornwall and any reccomendations for a fitter??

I fitted a Melett after a similar question. It seems fine after a few months of use.

If I was doing another I'd look at the recon deals from Midland Turbo or similar company. I thought I was going to tidy up the one I took off for use on another car, so one new Melett looked like good value to get two cars done.

It wasn't very hard to fit myself. I'd have thought any local VAG specialist will have done a few already. Whoever does it will probably want a new oil line as well to give you a warranty. I used the Darkside braided, flexible one. I wasn't a big fan of the pinched nuts at were in the Darkside fitting kit. Ask them to put VAG ones on?

That is some really useful information, thanks for taking the time to reply.
It's just that the melett seems so cheap compared to the garret but they do seem a well regarded company and its definitely reassuring to hear from someone that has fitted one.
To be fair the car runs great, no limp mode or smoke just the whine and if I was not worried that the turbo could take out my engine I would just wait. It's a hard choice to know what to do but I am leaning towards peace of mind.
    Cheers.
