I hope that this is in the correct section. Not my car / discussing problem over many beers / guessing age of car.

I know you can buy DPF cleaning fluid. I can’t (given my limited mechanical knowledge) understand how the manifold needs replacing?

The car is anAudi A3 SE TDI 170 Sportback with a big diesel 2litre turbo engine. It was built and designed for lots of motorway driving, which I was doing at the time. I had it for two years, and then moved down to Hastings. Its had nine years of pootling around town and country roads. Very little blasting up Mp-ways. the DPF filter is now completely blocked up.Three yellow warnings lights showing on dashboard. One is for the DPF. Another for the manifold. And one for the glow light. Dunno what that is. Local Garage say manifold and dpf need replacing. About eight or nine hundred pounds each. In good working order book price for car is £2,500 to £3,000. So repairs just not worth me getting done. The time has come to get rid

The manifold cokes up from the egr process and chocks the inlet flow with sticky carbon deposits.

As you say a good blast up and down the motorway every once in a while really helps keep diesels clean.

I would get some decent manifold cleaner and clean it myself. There are plenty of DPF cleaning companies around now.
