Hi I have just replaced the head gasket on my a3 1.6 AEH engine as it was pressurising the water system. I think I caught it early enough that it didn’t overheat. I did not get the head skimmed but I did check it with a machined straight edge and a feeler gauge and the head was good. After I put it back together with new gasket and bolts torqued to correct specs it now smokes when warm. If you start it from cold it’s fine till it starts to warm up then it starts to pump out a lot of grey/ white smoke which is smoke not steam. I have taken the car for a long drive and is not using any water and it doesn’t look or smell like burning oil ether. It starts really easy and sounds good. The car did not smoke before I changed the head gasket. At idle it looks to stop smoking completely but at 3000 rpm it’s really bad but also seems to come and go. I have no idea what could have gone wrong to cause this. Any advice or suggestions would be gratefully received

    Thanks

They have a very nasty habit of liner cracking across the top of the bore that only shows up once released and then re-torqued which is very depressing... it has happened to me twice now on the 06A block such as AKL and AEH but thankfully most have gone to the scrap yard now instead of making me weep.
