Twin counter rotating twice engine speed Lanchester balancer shafts smooth out 4 pot high compression diesel resonance .

    Makes an engineering difference .

The existing 77mm key only fits 15mm into the poorly designed #2 balancer shaft keyway .

The keyway is a bore with 6 tiny machined grooves that except the very tips of the 6 shoulders , fragile beyond belief .

OEM 100mm in some CR improve with 35mm contact length .

A kit from KMB Parts Direct bullet proofs the design by using the OEM 100mm key but the balancer shaft keyway is deeper , perfectly centered , harder and actually hexagonal with 38-40mm of contact .

Tell me more about the 'remanufacture' of the second balance shaft and oil pump to take the 100mm hex key drive.
Is there a "kit" and if so from whom?

Also gentlemen, I see an alternative in this Youtube link --- VW and Audi TDI oil pump failure and balance shaft FAQ - YouTube --- a complete replacement oil pump only kit simply deleting the over-complicated balance shaft package. What d'you think of this?? No commitment asked for , just experienced opinion.

(Of the two I would prefer the mod to the 100mm drive hex.)

Lastly , Crasher, guide me as to how, knowing the VIN Number and the build date I can look up the OEM part number of any part I need on a 'parts list'.
    Thanks and regards
    Ted
Crasher is in the trade and therefore has many things mere mortals do not possess. Deleting the balance unit and Fitting a chain drive replacement has been found to have mixed results. Some say not much extra vibration and others considerably so meaning things wear out much sooner.

KMB Kit 8 is what you need if you have the chain drive, Kit 9 if you have the gear drive.

I'm far less versed in the practical application of all this than Crasher, etc but to try and answer the Q you asked me above...

VW's parts database sometimes lists changes against VIN number, and sometimes against date. If you match your VIN to the ones in the info I copied above:
    Code:
     Yours: 3C-6E233140
    Change: 3C-6E082000
you can see that yours is later, hence into the gear driven variant.

The follower change is listed by date, not VIN, and was in late 2009 if I read correctly - hence you are before that and in the 77mm camp.

There are lots of anciliary changes on bolts, etc that have to be matched against the balancer module change. If you can find a reliable looking kit I'd go for that unless you can:
    • Find a parts list where someone did the change (maybe there was a VAG tech bulletin listing all of these for their workshops?)
    • Find a copy of ETKA to pore over all the manufacturing and service / warranty changes to work out what happend when with what part between model years and pump changes
    • Have the car off the road for a while while you work out which bit doesn't now fit, what is needed, order it, etc.

You subscribe to a trade only parts system monthly or annually if you can afford it.

    Me again. -- and
    The old subject again!
Thank you to all you experienced VW people. I now have my original gear driven balance shaft/oil pump unit BUT with KMB Autoparts re-machined secondary balance shaft with the 100mm full hex key drive. -- oh, and a new turbo. It now looks pretty bullet proof to me.

Excellent service and engineering from KMB, nice very helpful man, Graham.

So VW, what's next ? -- Infernal EGR valves? with silly little plastic flap actuators?? Ha Ha!
    Cheers.

ohh, let’s make a list of the travails I endure on the glorious 3C... in no particular order.

    1) Injectors
    2) Steering column lock
    3) Any one of the five door lock units
    4) Rear wiper motor (causing the fifth lock failure above)
    5) Rear caliper motors
    6) Rear wheel bearing magnetic rings
    7) ABS sensors
    8) BCM fault stopping the horn or wipers working and which when a new one is fitted, it decides to change the coding of the ABS pump... ohh yes, see that.
    9) Turbo im/explosion, whichever it decides on
    10) DMF failure.
    11) Crank speed sender G28 failure, and of course the 4mm hex location will round ou, inevitably this will be not long after you have just done the DMF.
    12) Parking brake ECU meltdown caused by the cheap new calipers fitted dealing with 5)
    13) Fuel lift pump failure
    14) Finding the tank full of oil sludge because the tandem pump has failed internally
    15) Front wishbone front bush failure, not to mention the consul bushes
    16) Going for an MOT and finding the rear end is ******* and also finding the boot floor is completely rotten
    17) Holes in the back of the sills (seen this on a 2010)
    18) Rear bump stops falling to bits making the **** squat and knackering the rear tyres.
    19) Trying to do the rear lower arm bushes and finding the inner bolts rusted solid in the bushes
    20) Pig tail rear caliper pipes twisting when you try and remove them for whatever else’s has gone kaput
    21) Front caliper carrier wear and corrosion causing pad click
    22) Rear caliper sliders seizing and knackering your new pads
    23) Power rack failure
    24) Noisy front wheel bearings
    25) Leaking front dampers
    26) Noisy front top mounts
    27) Gearbox loosing gears due to shift lever failure inside the box
    28) Concentric release bearing failure
    29) Clutch master cylinder failure
    30) Main cloning fan going loopy and flattening the battery
    31) Alarm siren fault causing a flat battery
    32) Cold start issues due to a slow cranking Valeo starter motor
    33) cam belt tensioner stud failure
    34) Water pumps not doing it or leaking
    35) Head gasket failure due to block top surface cracking

Seriously, in 40 years of working on the marque from very early air cooled to almost new, the 2006>2008 3C is THE worst car they have ever made reliability wise.

Thats a quick list of the usual 2006>2008 3C failures minus the point of this thread, oil pump/balancer **** ups over three design variations!

Crasher --- Gulp!! Thanks. Many thanks! I mean it; I much appreciate to know all about whatever car I have and I certainly wish I had that knowledge if this car before I bought it.
Having said that I will drive it for a short while and more than likely sell it as, precisely like my Moto Guzzi m'bike, I will not trust it.
Briefly the Bike -- Breva 1200. Fabulous bike to ride, wonderful characteristics but recurring electrical problems --- rubbish , too complicated wiring design. That's going -- I have resorted to an older model BMW R850R a bike I hade before; 80K miles with not a problem.

Lastly from your experience what is a generally reliable VW Estate diesel, pre- June 2007, or come to that any other make estate that you might recommend I consider?
    Cheers.

Diesel, hummmm... The best built VAG product is Skoda, for me a Superb, the 2L petrol 4wd Estate is THE perfect car... if I could afford one.
