So here we go, last year the good old engine management light made a undesired visit. So the car paid a visit to a local VW dealership for a scan and it appeared the EGR had thrown its toys out of the cot. "And we would like to remove the best part of £1100 for replacement sir "was the very kind reply for how much to change it.

So in the immortal words of "sod that" i found a VW Specialist garage who did it for £540. Happy days. All appeared good, no management light when i drove it away back home. HOWEVER the following morning going to work it re appeared so a visit back to the garage to tell them it had re surfaced had heads scratching. They could not book it back in until the first week of the new year which was not an issue as the car drove fine with no performance issues. (oh and just to back up that the failure was the same, when the car went for its MOT the tester confirmed the same fault and yes he did get the car to pass the MOT)

So they got the car two weeks ago. They tested the replacement EGR and could not fault it. They had previously checked the harness as well with no issues found. They did some further digging and found corrosion in the ECU itself????? It would appear there is an issue with Passats and CC's from 2012 to 2015 with moisture getting in through the connectors. So off it went to see if it could be repaired but alas the corrosion was too bad. However they did manage to source a replacement ECU that was fully tested, not corroded and correct for my car. Happy days. It turned up yesterday ready for it to be cloned to my car. So the data was cloned across and NOTHING!!! ***!! Several hours spent trying to get it to work with no joy.

So going on from there we are now looking at another second hand ECU to see if that will work. If not and i really do not want to go down this route, a brand new ECU at serious cost. AND if that does not fix the issue i'm stuck with a massive bill for an ECU that cannot be returned.

So VW guru's any idea why the replacement ECU we currently have will not talk to my car, the garage suspects the ECU either has a hard lock on it to a specific car or it been tampered with / re mapped. Yes its the correct one for my make and specific model of car.

Its a 2014 177GT CC. Any info gratefully accepted. Oh and to add the old ecu still works, the car works as advertised but still has the EGR management light.
If it ain't broke leave it alone!!!

For £540 they have probaly fitted an aftermarket EGR valve, I have had these fail before we can even get the car off the lift so I refuse to fit anything except the genuine new (not exchange) part. Could you private message me your reg number as there are two different systems used here.

I am always extremely reluctant to point a finger at the ECU, they tend to be amongst the most reliable parts on a car and the EGR valve used on your car is probably amongst THE most unreliable part in recent VAG history, perhaps apart from Valeo rear wiper motors, ohh Valeo make the EGR units too... Why DO VAG keep commissioning parts from this company?

The brand new units genuine current VAG part number for your car is 03L 131 512 DQ and you could try and find out if that is what they fitted, these retail at £364.92 including VAT. If they fitted ANYTHING other than this I would go straight back to the beginning and fit a genuine one. I could be wrong but we have been through nightmares with aftermarket EGR coolers and now flatly refuse to fit them EVEN if the customer says it is their responsibility, we just don’t want the stress.

Cheers Crasher, i will ask them next week what they fitted and see if it is this part number. Thanks for the heads up.

Crasher,i had a chat with the garage and it is an OEM EGR. I queried them about it and as he said, the amount of time it takes to get into this particular item, its not worth the hassle of an aftermarket EGR.

So going on from there we are still on the hunt for a specific 2nd hand ECU so when we can get one we can on from there.

My lad has previously had a lot of work done by them on his old Fabia VRS and they has always been very reasonable on price. Normally i stick with VW for my work but at their crazy prices. and at a particularly bad time of the year i have had to go elsewhere.

I have the car back at the mo as it works fine, just the Management light on.

If a new ECU cures it I will be genuinely astonished. I distrust the acronym OEM, it makes me very suspicious they are covering their tracks having fitted an aftermarket unit as if later it is found to not be a genuine VAG TPS supplied unit and it tuns out to be a Pierburg 7.09720.00.0 they can quite correctly say they were telling the truth as Pierburg is THE OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) of the factory fitted part BUT I have had two of these fail on me, one before we even got the car off of the lift.

Well an update and it was the ECU.

A correct second hand one was sourced, cloned, sent away with regards to the Immobiliser, fitted and happy days no more fault.

So it would appear the corrosion within the ECU was the issue.

Taken a long time to deal with this but that was down to me being away on a course for seven weeks.

ECU failure is so rare, I probably see it once every five years.

The old adage of look before you jump comes into play today. Your earlier sage words Crasher may have come back to bite me in the ****.

We went out to get food shopping done and basically as we pulled into the car park it felt like the car had a brief hiccup!! Anyway dashboard was clear, pulled in and went shopping. Got back in the car still fine, drove home and it was only until i reveresed into my drive and saw the bloody engine management light

So by my calculations that was seven engine starts and here we go AGAIN. Needless to say i rang the garage and said that EGR has to be the culprit.

    Watch this space!!!
