I think it's well worth trying the thermostat given relative ease. Not sure how it fits with your observations on cabin heating controls though.

That is probably a block matrix. Gonna flush the system this weekend and see what comes out.

Any idea how I get the thermostat out on my engine? I thinks it's a full housing thing. Can the thermostat be removed from it?

    Regards
    James

I would tend to agree, and that was my suggestion up thread. But others are saying there is no valve to force water through the matrix by blocking the "other" path. In which case blocked matrix or not water would keep flowing on that "other" path.

OK, so something very strange is happening.

Upon driving home the particle filter warning light came on, this went of five mins later, then the coil light can on, I scanned car using elm thing.

    Got code p0101 maf sensor.

Does anybody know if these are all linked?

    Regards James

We had one chap on here with a CAY engine with this problem and he rebuilt the engine with no chnage and ended up fitting a new engine, we have not experienced it yet but from what I have read it is a fault in the head casting.

Its a long thread hope it's not been already mentioned but first point of call with the heater matrix and the thermostat for that matter is to have a hose check. Grab a hold of the inlet and outlet hoses to see if one is considerably or marginally colder then other - this with vehicle at operating temp. Also can do the same for the thermostat - only difference being check it whilst it's warming up from cold. The thermostat will have a main outlet and a bypass. The main outlet will start to open allowing hot coolant through as the engine warms up. Compare the bypass hose temp to main thermostat hose temp till full operating is achieved. Should give you a good idea if there is a problem

Blowing colder air could be the heater control as well as a problem with the coolant. Try adjusting the control knob. My car needs this every now and then to blow the hottest air.

Also I suggest topping up the coolant a tad, just in case it is at the level is where it sometimes can trigger the low coolant warning when running under pressure.
